Roger Federer is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, having won over a hundred titles in his career. However, it appears he has been snubbed by his home tournament, the Swiss Indoors Open in Basel. There are speculations that he had a row with the tournament organizers.

Federer shares a unique relationship with the Swiss Indoors, having worked as a ball boy at the event during childhood. He won the title from 2006 to 2008 and also from 2017 to 2019. He remains the tournament’s record winner, having won the title 10 times during his playing days.

In 2019, at the age of 38, he became the oldest champion of the event. In all, he has a record 75 wins in the competition. However, according to Blick, this year’s edition of the tournament is without the tennis icon image anywhere in the events center.

In fact, the only mention of Federer’s name is only in the list of winners at the entrance of the event. The outlet added that the 42-year-old had a disagreement with the tournament boss Roger Brennwald over his fee in 2012. The tension did ease after he played at the event that same year and gave all his prize money to his foundation.

However, in 2022, Federer’s final career season, the Swiss star played his last match at the Laver Cup, skipping his home country event. The following year, the tournament wanted to have a farewell event for the legend but he declined the offer.

During his on-court interview, he admitted that the tournament was one of the reasons he is still playing.

It’s a pleasure to come to Basel each year, it’s one of the reasons why I aim to keep going, so I want to thank the tournament for the invitation, for the chance to play in the main draw.
