Tennis legend Roger Federer has claimed that the current tennis is old school and has suggested that more colors are added to the sport to make it more attractive for the younger generation of athletes. Federer also fears that if it does not happen, people might prefer other sports like football or any other attractive sport.

Federer made these comments while speaking at a press conference of an inauguration event for a tennis court. He opined that tennis needs new methods and new ideas as it is still quite old school. Federer’s comments come at a time when tennis is going through a transition phase.

With the Big Three no longer active on the ATP Tour and the likes of Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova already retired, tennis faces difficulty in getting more people attracted to the sport. In fact, quite a few fans are switching to other sports claiming that tennis is not the same anymore. Amid this phase, Federer suggests making some changes.

I would like to see a little more color in tennis. Our sport is quite “old school”. We need new methods, new ideas. If we don't have that, young people will go to football or another sport

Roger Federer’s claims make an interesting point

Roger Federer‘s claim that tennis is old school and needs more color makes an interesting point. This is not the first time someone has raised this concern. Quite a few experts have claimed that tennis is losing its spark and the reason is its very nature.

Tennis has always been portrayed as an elite sport and players with emotions are frowned upon. The biggest example is Novak Djokovic. The Serbian faces criticism for expressing his emotions while playing. Not just Djokovic but any player that shows emotions is not celebrated as others who don’t.

This led to Croatian player Borna Gojo calling tennis boring. Gojo, before his match against Djokovic at the 2023 US Open said that he likes it when things are heated up and would love it when it is noisy. Gojo said that the spectators are expected to stay silent while watching a match and it is not ideal for the sport.

I don’t mind the noise. I played college tennis, so for me it’s always – the crazier, the better. I am used to it. I like it when the atmosphere gets a bit tense, because tennis is an extremely boring sport. As a spectator – you have to stay silent… I would change that, look at the other sports. I come watch Hajduk (football team from his hometown) play and I have to stay silent? Come on!”

With Roger Federer also suggesting to add some color, it might be the right time for the authorities to make a few tweaks here and there and keep the spirits of the sport higher.
