Roger Federer has been out of action for almost a year now and the fans can’t wait to see him back on tour. The Swiss maestro is scheduled to return in March at Doha.

During his time away from the sport, the Swiss legend underwent two surgeries on his right knee and followed that up with a lengthy rehabilitation process under the watchful eyes of Pierre Paganini – who has been training him for 21 years now.

Paganini recently provided some updates about the Swiss star’s recovery process. Paganini highlighted the fact that Federer’s muscles have become weaker with age, but lavished special praise for the 39-year-old’s perseverance.

Pierre Paganini explained the seriousness of the injury in an interview with ‘Tagesanzeiger’.

This knee had caused him problems for several years. (…) He and the whole team had been dealing with it for a long time, ”said the 63-year-old on Federer’s right knee.

Between ‘everything is okay’ and ‘rien ne va plus’ you have a player who did an exhibition match in Cape Town in front of 50,000 people and was shortly afterwards on the operating table. Within 2 weeks.”

“If a problem has existed for several years, it is clear that it will be complex. And then the most important thing is to move forward slowly. So that you don’t have any more setbacks.”, he continued.

“The knee was particularly fragile after 2 operations. That made us move even more slowly. Now we’re on the home straight.”
