Harrison Butker seems to have struck a nerve with several people. So far, the critics of his graduation speech were coming from outside the sport. With a few instances of players and other personnel not agreeing with him, it has been fairly quiet from the Kansas City Chiefs as well as the league.

Now NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell breaks his silence about Butker’s seemingly sexist comments.

The commissioner said this when asked about Butker’s remarks;

FS Video
Listen, we have over 3,000 players. We have executives around the league. They have diversity of opinions and thoughts just like America does. I think that’s something that we treasure. That's part of what, I think ultimately makes us as a society better. We're not going to go much beyond the statement we made last week.

This was in line with what the NFL‘s statement which came out recently. Evidently, his response was more diplomatic and did not want to give his own views.

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ kicker faced a lot of backlash for his comments about how women should be. Fans even asked the Chiefs to dismiss their longtime kicker for his seemingly sexist comments. Not only fans, but even women in sports as well as outside have condemned what he thought was the right way for a woman to live.

All of this happened while the footballing world waited for the Chiefs and the NFL to take a stand. Now, with what the NFL and Roger Goodell said, it could silence the noise a bit. It could also take it up a notch.

Harrison Butker has the support of his team

Even though the comments triggered widespread calls for him to correct his stance, Butker has stood his ground. Most notably, head coach Andy Reid lashed out at a reporter for asking him about Butker’s comments. Suggesting that Reid is going through the frustrations of having to deal with several players being in the news for the wrong reasons. But Patrick Mahomes gave a fitting response, suggesting that Butker is entitled to his own views even though he may not agree with them.

With all that has transpired, Harrison Butker would like to get a breather. Maybe the NFL, his team, and Roger Goodell’s statements could give him that. But with the season still a while away, it might take a bit more time for it to stop.
