In another major upset at the Doubles Event in the ATP Madrid Open 2021, Indo-Canadian pair of Rohan Bopanna-Denis Shapovalov have defeated the top seed pair of Colombians Robert Farah-Juan Cabal in the Round of 16.

The 41-year old Bopanna who is ranked 42 in the World in Doubles has paired up with the 22-year old Shapovalov who is ranked 59. The duo first played together in 2019 and make their first appearance on the tour since their first round defeat at the 2020 Rolland Garros.

With a tough challenge, not many gave Bopanna and Shapovalov a chance against the seasoned pair of Farah and Cabal who are ranked World No. 2 and 3 respectively in the Doubles. However, the duo played at their very best wrapping up the game in 1hour 13minutes in straight sets without dropping their serve before claiming the match point in 6-3 6-4 victory over the Colombians.

Robert Farah and Juan Cabal have been one of the more successful pairings having won two consecutive Grand Slams in 2019. The pair won the 2019 Wimbledon and 2019 US Open together. The Colombians have been going strong in 2021 as well winning two the Dubai Open followed by the Barcelona Open from where they travelled to Madrid.

With their victory against the Colombians, Bopanna-Shapovalov are now set to play against the German pair of Alexander Zverev (World No. 168 in Doubles) and Tim Puetz (World No. 55 in Doubles) who similar to their quarter-final opponents have won their first two rounds in straight sets.

The Quarter-final between Rohan Bopanna-Denis Shapovalov and Alexander Zverev-Tim Puetz will take place on the 7th of May,2021.
