Mumbai Indians opener Rohit Shama’s conversation with Lucknow Super Giants’ mentor Zaheer Khan has gone viral, igniting controversy on social media. The 37-year-old in the viral clip, seemed to discuss his batting contributions for MI, amid concerns regarding his poor form.

Rohit Sharma has struggled to perform in the IPL this season, having scored just 21 runs across three innings. He began the season with a four-ball duck against CSK, followed by an eight-run knock against GT, in their second match, as MI went on to lose both the matches. While his team did bounce back with a win against KKR, Rohit Sharma got out on a score just 13 runs off 12 balls, in the third match as well.

The 37-year-old’s recent form has raised questions over his inclusion in the side, with many suggesting that he should be dropped in favor of the younger players. Rohit Sharma has also seen his role reduced at Mumbai Indians, despite having led the team successfully for over a decade. He played two out of MI’s first three matches only as an impact substitute.

Amid criticism, a viral social media clip, shared by the team, ahead of their IPL encounter against LSG (which they lost), seems to have put Rohit Sharma in trouble. The clip attempted to highlight the bond between Rohit Sharma and LSG captain Rishabh Pant, who was seen hugging the 37-year-old in affection. However, fans caught notice of the 37-year-old conversation with LSG mentor Zaheer Khan, prior to Pant’s appearance.

Rohit Sharma was heard stating to the former MI bowling coach, that he does not need to contribute anymore for MI, after having already led the side to five IPL trophies in the past. His statement did not hold well with fans, who doubted his conviction for the franchise. Some of them even claimed that it stemmed from Sharma’s disappointment with MI’s decision to remove him as captain.

The 37-year-old was relieved of his captaincy duties last season, with Hardik Pandya being handed the role instead. The decision was not met with optimism by the fans as well, who booed their new captain, both on and off the pitch. It also reportedly created a rift inside the MI camp. While the tension seems to have sorted out this time, Sharma’s recent statement does not leave him in good light.

Moreover, it is not the first time that the 37-year-old has landed in trouble for his comments. Last season, Rohit Sharma’s conversation with then KKR batting coach Abhishek Nayar went viral. Sharma had claimed that it could be his last season for MI, speculating a shift to another franchise in the future.

Fans blast out at Rohit Sharma, following his recent comments on Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have not had the best start to their 2025 IPL campaign, winning just one out of their first three matches. One player who has come under fire is Rohit Sharma. The former MI captain most recently, claimed that he does not need to contribute anymore for the team, sparking sharp reactions.

Fans took to social media to express their reactions and vent out their anger on the 37-year-old veteran Indian star. Some of them even went to the extent of labeling Rohit Sharma as ‘greedy’, while a few others urged the Indian captain to retire playing in the IPL. Notably, several other fans called out the Mumbai Indians’ social media team for running an agenda against Sharma.

Nonetheless, despite the team faltering in the early stages of their IPL campaign, several young players and uncapped talents have emerged from within the MI ranks. The likes of youngsters Vignesh Puthur, Satyanarayana Raju and Ashwani Kumar have been a revelation this season.
