Rohit Sharma, Manika Batra among 5 athletes selected to be honored with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2020

Rohit Sharma, Manika Batra, Rani Rampal, Vinesh Phogat and Mariyappan Thangavelu are the athletes who are going to be honoured with India’s most prestigious sporting award i.e The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. The National Award Selection Committee met on August 17th and 18th and handed over the recommended list to the Sports Ministry.
RAJIV GANDHI KHEL RATNA AWARD WINNERS
Rohit Sharma is the vice-captain for India in the limited-overs format. He has scored more than 13,000 runs internationally. With this achievement of his, he joins the ranks of star cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.
Vinesh Phogat has caught the eye in the wrestling world ever since she won a gold in Commonwealth and Asian Games in 2018. She is the first women wrestler to clinch a gold in the Asian Games ever. Not to forget, Phogat also bagged bronze in the 2019 Asian Wrestling Championships.
Mariyappan Thangavelu is a Paralympic gold medalist in the T42 high jump category. He won his medal in the previous edition of the Olympic Games in Rio. It is always so heartening to see when someone overcomes sheer troubles to become an inspiration.
Paddler Manika Batra had a remarkable year in 2018 wherein she won the Commonwealth Games gold medal and Asian Games bronze in women’s singles.
Rani Rampal is the captain of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team. She is the first female hockey player to get Khel Ratna award. Overall, the third hockey player ever to get the same.
This is the second time since 2016 that four or more athletes have been finalized for the award. India’s President Ram Nath Kovind would be announcing the winners on August 29, when the ceremony takes place virtually in Rashtrapati Bhawan.
