They lost the ICC World Test Championship Final in 2023 against Australia at the Oval and then suffered a loss against the Aussies in the ICC ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad. However, they finally managed to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.
Sharma’s childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, recently talked about his interaction with the Indian captain after losing the ODI World Cup 2023 final. Lad remarked that he told the Indian captain that his team played badly in the final, and his wicket was the turning point of the game. He also said that Sharma then promised him that he would pay him a ‘Guru Dakshina’ by winning the T20 World Cup in 2024.

India won the T20 World Cup 2024 without losing any match. They became the first team to win the T20 World Cup by staying undefeated in the tournament. India won the T20 World Cup after 17 long years and also ended the drought of 13 years without an ICC trophy. The Indian captain led from the front and also played selfless cameos while opening the innings for his team.

Sharma took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli and revolutionized the team in limited-overs cricket. He changed the team’s philosophy, shifting to an aggressive and fearless brand of cricket. Lad praised Sharma for his captaincy skills and said that he was sure that Sharma would go on to lead the Indian Cricket Team given he was a brilliant captain in school as well.

Sharma retired from T20I cricket after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados. However, he is going through a tough time in Test cricket with the bat and as a captain. Under his captaincy, the team was whitewashed 3-0 at home against New Zealand.
It was the first Test series whitewash suffered at home for India since they started playing Test cricket and the first loss at home since 2012. India has now suffered a loss in the Adelaide Test match against Australia and is tied 1-1 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy with three matches to go.
