Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant, on the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, shared a behind-the-scenes video of the team’s 2025 Champions Trophy victory. The video included a moment where Rohit Sharma responded to Pant’s question about his retirement.

The talks surrounding Rohit Sharma’s future with the Indian cricket team remain up in the air, especially as the 38-year-old is now only playing in one format. Sharma had already announced his retirement from T20Is last year, after India’s victory in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. He also called time on his red-ball career earlier this year, before the series against England, but stated that he would continue playing ODIs.

The BCCI is reportedly aiming for a transition in the ODI squad, similar to the one that has already occurred in the Test and T20I squads. It is speculated that Shubman Gill, who was appointed as India’s red-ball skipper, might be ready to take over as India’s new ODI captain and lead the team into the 2027 World Cup.

Amid the confusion, a throwback video shared by Rishabh Pant has gone viral because of a moment featuring Rohit Sharma. The video, recorded by Pant on his phone, shows the jubilant reactions of the Indian players after their 2025 Champions Trophy final victory over New Zealand. It also features a playful exchange between Sharma and Pant, with the latter jokingly asking him about his retirement plans.

Rohit Sharma, who was celebrating with a stump in hand, had a humorous response to Pant’s question. The 38-year-old exclaimed that he had no retirement plans and intended to continue playing, and cheekily remarked that he would not retire after every final win for India. Sharma was referencing the way he had announced his T20I retirement after the 2024 T20 World Cup final victory over South Africa.

Har Baar Jeetenge Toh Mai Retirement Thodi Lete Rahunga. [What? Should I take retirement? I can’t retire after every victory.]

Rishabh Pant laughed at the response, with his video also capturing the moment after Ravindra Jadeja hit the winning runs in the CT final and the emotional outpouring from the players and support staff. Pant even recorded the celebrations on the field during the post-match award ceremony. Rohit Sharma did play a crucial role in the 2025 CT final victory, scoring a match-winning 76 runs off 83 balls.

The video featured several other players in addition to Rohit Sharma, including Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Jadeja, Axar Patel, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and others. Although Pant did not make it into the playing XI for any of the matches, he clearly relived the moment with immense joy.

Will Rishabh Pant Be a Part of India’s Squad for the Upcoming 2025 Asia Cup?

Star Indian wicket-keeper and the IPL’s most expensive signing ever, Rishabh Pant, is among the many big names, expected to miss out on a place in the 2025 Asia Cup. Pant is currently recovering from a foot injury he sustained while playing for India, in the fourth Test against England.

While Sanju Samson is expected to reclaim his role as the primary wicketkeeper in the Asia Cup squad, the selection committee is also exploring options for the backup keeper position, with Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel being the candidates. It means another snub for 27-year-old Rishabh Pant, whose last T20I appearance was against Sri Lanka in July 2024, after the ICC T20 World Cup victory.

In addition to Rishabh Pant, several other players who have returned from the England tour might not secure a spot in the Asia Cup squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Siraj are also among those who could be left out.
