Rohit Sharma was under big pressure due to his poor batting form in Test cricket and also his captaincy results in the lead-up to the fifth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. India have lost five out of the last six Test matches under Sharma and also did not win any. The Hitman dropped himself out of the playing XI in Sydney, as Jasprit Bumrah was asked to lead the side.

After Sharma was missing from the XI in the Sydney Test, everyone speculated that he had been dropped and wouldn’t be part of Test cricket anymore. The fans felt that Sharma would announce his retirement from the longest format of the game.

However, the Mumbaikar clarified everything on Day 2. He stated that the decision was just to not carry too many out-of-form players in the playing XI. Sharma stressed the fact and understood that his form is not great in Test cricket and hence, made the sacrifice for the betterment of the Indian team.

It’s all about teamwork. I can’t speak about others, but I am like this. If somebody does not like this, it’s okay. I’m not scoring runs with the bat. Form is not there. Can’t carry too many out-of-form players in the team. The decision was difficult. But the thought was about what the team needed.

Rohit Sharma said in an interview to Irfan Pathan in Star Sports.

Sharma missed out on the first Test match due to the birth of his son. He has played in five innings in the ongoing BGT and has scored 31 runs at a dismal average of 6.20. Sharma has totally been out of touch and looked nowhere close to regaining his form.

Rohit Sharma clarified that he is not retiring from Test cricket

Sharma squashed rumours of a possible retirement from Test cricket. He also took a dig at the outside noise who wants him to retire from Test cricket, stating that he himself will take the decision of when to retire. He elaborated that he is lacking runs in the format currently but will work harder in the future.

I have stood down from this Test but I am not going anywhere. This is not a retirement or moving away from the format. A guy with a mic, pen or laptop, what they write or say, it doesn’t matter. They cannot decide for us. I took the call to stand down after coming to Sydney.

Rohit Sharma said.

Meanwhile, India currently has a lead of 145 runs in the second innings and have four wickets in their bag. They will try to grind deep into Day 3 and post a target in excess of 200 for Australia to chase. If they manage to cross 200, it will be a very difficult target for Aussies to chase on this Sydney surface.
