The world went berserk when Wimbledon posted an image of Rohit Sharma eating the pitch mud after India’s historic triumph at the Kensington Oval Barbados. The image also had Novak Djokovic right next to him, carrying out his iconic grass-eating tradition.

Going by Novak Djokovic‘s history, he just wanted to taste the grass on the Wimbledon court after a victory and from thereon, he turned it into a method that would become a phenomenon. Sharma had no such history though. He just wanted to taste the pitch.

Nothing was scripted. It was all coming instinctively. I was feeling the moment. When I went to the pitch, that pitch gave us this trophy. I will remember that ground forever in my life and that pitch as well. I wanted to have a piece of it with me.
Rohit Sharma said on a video for BCCI

He further added that the moment was extremely special and he simply wanted a memoir of the very epicenter where all the dreams that Team India had came true and as a result the famous image of Rohit Sharma tasting the surface had gone viral.

Sharma also talked at length about how India’s triumph was a process that took years of planning to come to life. He said that he had all the time in the world to sleep now and wanted to live every single moment of the triumph that saw India clinch the hallowed silverware for the second time.

What followed after the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup?

Dravid thanked Sharma for requesting him to stay back after the defeat in the 2023 World Cup final and eventually it was under his reign that this time India crossed the final hurdle without incurring a solitary defeat.
