It will be an All-Russian showdown in the second round at Rome. World No.2 Daniil Medvedev faces his ATP Cup team mate Aslan Karatsev. It has been a dream season for Karatsev so far. Coming as a qualifier, he went on to reach make it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Later in March, he won his first ATP Tour title in Dubai. Currently, he is in the Top 30 and is having a decent Clay court run. He reached the final of the Serbia Open last month and in the first round at Rome, he defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in straight set 7-6(2),6-4.

His opponent and countryman Daniil Medvedev is having a rather struggling Clay season after a superb run in the Australian Open. He was tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of Monte Carlo Masters and was knocked out of the Round of 16 in Madrid.

In Madrid, Medvedev was clearly frustrated after losing the first set and yelled that he doesn’t want to play on this surface anymore.

Daniil Medvedev vs Aslan Karatsev: Prediction

Aslan Karatsev

It will be a cracking match between two friends who know each others’ game very well. It is no big brainer that Medvedev doesn’t like playing on Clay. The amount of topspin he gains doesn’t help him either. He will have to engage in big rallies if he wants to topple Karatsev.

Karatsev’s game is much more suited to Clay than Medvedev’s. His court coverage with slides aids him everytime and will be handy against Medvedev too. Expect the match to go down the distance with Karatsev upsetting the Australian Open finalist.

Prediction: Karatsev to win in three sets.
