The World No.9 is inarguably the best clay court season of his career. After an early exit in Monte Carlo, the Italian went on to capture the title in Serbia. Last week, he even made the finals of the Madrid Masters, only to be denied at in the final set by Alexander Zverev. Although the 25-year-old had an early stutter in the opening round against Nikoloz Basilashvili yesterday, he found a way to progress ahead. Given his momentum, Berrettini will be extra motivated to make another deep run in front of his home fans in Rome.

On the other hand, the 31-year-old has played as many as 12 matches on the dirt this season and is certainly not short of match practice. After three consecutive second round exits in Cagiliari, Monte Carlo and Barcelona, the Australian reached the quarters in Munich, but once again faced another second round exit in Madrid. Going by Millman’s recent history, it would be a big surprise if he marches ahead in Rome this week.

The Italian is coming in with confidence and belief. We have seen him improve throughout the clay court season, adding more variety to the game. While he may be physically wary from playing relentless tennis, his momentum should see him through this round. Sure, the Australian can ask questions and pose challenges, but an upset here seems unlikely.

Match Prediction: Matteo Berrettini should win in two sets.
