Romelu Lukaku cannot catch a break! The 31-year-old Belgian striker has had at least three of his goals disallowed by VAR at the 2024 Euros. Unbelievably, after two of his goals were ruled out in Belgium’s 1-0 loss to Slovakia, another goal was overturned as they picked up their first win against Romania. Kevin De Bruyne and Youri Tielemans did the job for the Red Devils.
Lukaku got off to a flying start in the game, setting up Tielemans for his sides opener. The No.9 did well to shield off his marker before laying off the ball for his teammate who thundered it past the goalkeeper. The entire crowd thought Lukaku’s moment had come when the striker finished off a through ball from Kevin De Bruyne.
The player was quickly surrounded by his teammates who lost themselves in celebration. Sadly, a quick VAR check revealed that Lukaku was a pinch offside in the build-up. His sorrow was quickly washed away when De Bruyne delivered from close range.
The captain exquisitely finished off a ball from Koen Casteels to push Belgium up to second place in Group E.
Fans react to Romelu Lukaku’s tryst with VAR
Fans were nearly in disbelief as VAR ruled out a third consecutive goal for Romelu Lukaku over the space of two games. A fan said that if it wasn’t for the technology, Belgium’s No.10 would’ve been top scorer of the tournament. Some compared his bad luck to that of Darwin Nunez and Timo Werner in previous seasons.
Some however, were confident that Lukaku would sooner or later find the net and that it was simply bad luck that kept him from scoring against Romania. Fans also praised his important assist for Youri Tielemans. Lukaku has always come up clutch for Belgium in international tournaments as fans recalled how good he was in the Euro qualifiers as well as previous editions of the FIFA World Cup.
Things had gotten so out of hand that a few started thinking that the referees in charge of VAR were disallowing his goals just to make fun of him. A supporter hilariously added that Lukaku was going to win the VAR Golden Boot at this rate, pointing to his bad luck in Belgium’s opener too. What infuriated certain supporters was the fact that it was Lukaku’s kneecap that was offside.
