NBA players from the past have always carried themselves with a lot more conviction than recent retirees. Ron Harper is an example of one of these old school players who say what they believe with no filter. It is a blessing in many ways – these people don’t tiptoe around sensitive issues and say what’s on their mind. But it can also be something that comes back to bite them in the backside, as Ron Harper may find out soon.

Ron Harper has recently been on the fringes of the news cycle for all the right reasons. After all, his second son, Dylan Harper, has joined his elder brother Ron Harper Jr in the league after being drafted No. 2 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft. The family has the opportunity, just like the LeBron James family, Dell Curry and his sons Steph Curry and Seth Curry, Scottie Pippen and Gary Payton, among others, in this tradition.

Dylan Harper has a bright future ahead of him as the point guard of the future for the San Antonio Spurs. He will be playing alongside the future face of the NBA in Victor Wembanyama and other fledgling talents. Although the Spurs have lost Gregg Popovich as their head coach, they still have him in the front office along with their Big Three of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker on the coaching staff.

With all of these reasons to be thankful, Ron Harper has been more visible on social media in the lead-up to his second son’s draft. He has been outspoken in defending players from his era and reinforcing the notion of his illustrious teammate Michael Jordan as the de facto GOAT of the sport. Harper even took shots at LeBron James with a tweet after the Lakers star was dumped out of the playoffs in the first round.

But it seems that Ron Harper has gotten a little too comfortable and outspoken with his takes on other issues. The 15-year NBA veteran recently replied to a xenophobic post mobilizing hate against Muslims on the roads of Philadelphia. In response to claims that they had ‘shut down’ the street, Ron Harper tweeted:

Run them over…. Get out the streets

NBA fans pile on Ron Harper for his insensitive tweet

As expected, Ron Harper did not inspire a lot of love for his take. Muslims in the USA, and other parts of the world, have long been subjected to systemic discrimination and xenophobia, especially in the wake of 9/11. Talking about them in such inconsiderate tones betrays a total lack of understanding and empathy for their customs and how they conduct themselves during festivals.

Some looked at his take as a way to maintain his relevance after his son’s draft

His complete lack of human empathy was also pointed out.

He also had a small faction of supporters, deplorably.

Dylan Harper would be hoping his father doesn’t stick out with his inconsiderate thoughts more as he prepares to start a promising NBA career, giving him distractions that he probably doesn’t deserve to be dealing with.
