The New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers has distanced himself from the starting quarterback back Daniel Jones after the week 1 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at home. The quarterback, returning from an ACL injury, didn’t have the best beginnings on Sunday.

Sam Darnold‘s Vikings bulldozed the Giants 28-6 at the MetLife Stadium. Jones barely managed to complete half of his passes, going 22-42. He was even intercepted twice, failing to get the offense into a rhythm at any point in the game. The fans aren’t very happy about the $160m worth of Jones’ performance, booing him from time to time. After the recent game, a fan brutally lit the player’s jersey on fire to let the management know their feelings.

The blame and frustration are not just limited to fans. Giants WR Nabers didn’t hold back to let the media know his thoughts on the starting quarterback. However, this isn’t the first time Nabers has reacted differently, denoting some distancing and unhappiness with his team. The rookie seemed to have brutally blamed Jones for a loss in his first game. He admitted that he didn’t know what was happening with Jones, adding that he was equally perplexed as to why more targets didn’t come his way.

I mean I don’t know really what was going on back there, but I’m getting out of my routes and I’m just trying to make a play, trying to find him, trying to find a better throw for him to make, I was just doing my job. I mean, that’s all I can do.
Malik Nabers quipped to the reporters

Albeit this, the WR gave some explanation for the mishaps of the day. He added that Jones tried to get him the ball, unable to do so as there was a lot of pressure on his face. Nabers further pointed out that they will review the film and see how they could develop better plays and go from the initial loss. The rookie also observed that they needed to work on their drops, including himself, who had one drop.

Malik Nabers reminds people of Ray Flaherty with his jersey number

Nabers originally wore the number 9, but it was already assigned to the punter, Graham Gano. The No. 8 that he wore at LSU was taken by Jones. Faced with this predicament, Nabers decided to check the retired numbers and the No. 1 struck out to him.

Initially, there was some dissent by the Flaherty family to agree with the un-retiring of the jersey number. Ray Flaherty played 1928-29 and 1931-35 and led them to three NFL Championship Games. He is also famous for the idea of using sneakers in icy conditions in the famous 1934 “Sneaker’s Game.” Flaherty passed away in 1994. Additionally, Nabers paid tribute to Flaherty ahead of the game with a custom tee.

The Giant’s No. 1 jersey of Flaherty is the first number to be retired in the history of professional sports. Nabers allows today’s generation to know about Flaherty and his role in the team some 90 years ago. It is also special that the gesture came in the centenary season of the Giants, paving a way to remember history.
