“Besides three point shooting what does she bring!” – Rookie sensation Caitlin Clark gets a reality check from Chennedy Carter

Caitlin Clark and Chennedy Carter

A budding rivalry between Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter and Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark is emerging, with Carter recently receiving a flagrant 1 foul for a hip check on Clark during a game. Carter took to social media to express her feelings, as she questioned Clark’s game and praised her teammate Angel Reese for seemingly cheering on the contact.

This incident has fueled two larger narratives in WNBA discourse: that older veterans “hate” Clark and that the league is allowing players to take liberties with her by not cracking down on foul calls. While Carter’s remarks may add to the first narrative, her attitude isn’t exceptional – experienced players often carry a chip on their shoulder when facing younger peers, especially ones with as much hype as Clark.

Beside three point shooting what does she bring to the table man.

The WNBA would benefit from some interpersonal drama on the court, as long as it doesn’t cross a clear line. The league has lacked a true signature rivalry, with past examples like Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi feeling more like friendly one-upmanship and the Los Angeles Sparks and Minnesota Lynx’s rivalry fading with their title contention.

The incident has ensured that the return matchup between Chicago and Indiana on June 16 will be highly anticipated. While it’s unlikely that Carter and Clark will develop a lasting antagonism, the budding rivalry is a welcome addition to the WNBA, which could use more drama and intrigue on the court.

Fever coach Christie Sides slams WNBA over rough play

Indiana Fever coach, Christie Sides has slammed the WNBA for allowing rough play against rookie, Caitlin Clark. Sides called out the league on social media after Clark was fouled hard by Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter. She demanded action and cited consistent complaints about rough play against Clark.

This is unacceptable @WNBA. When will the consistent complaints be heard?!? Something has to be done!

The foul occurred with 15.8 seconds left in the third quarter. Carter shoulder-checked Clark to the ground as she prepared to receive an inbounds pass. Clark called it “not a basketball play” in a sideline interview. Sides praised Clark for handling the situation with composure.

The WNBA upgraded Carter’s foul to a Flagrant 1 after review. The Fever faces the New York Liberty next. Sides’ call to action highlights the need for the WNBA to address rough play and ensure player safety.
