Rory McIlroy had a lot to say about LIV Golf on Wednesday. Ahead of the 2025 Genesis Invitational tournament, the 4-time major champion spoke on the ongoing merger and potential reunification of the game. He would even praise LIV Golf for making a huge impact on the financial aspects of the sport.
LIV Golf was founded with the help of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia. As a result of this, the breakaway tour has a good of money with them.
The LIV Golf events have a huge purse prize of $20 million. With the league having no cuts, every player on this tour earns something by participating in the events with the winner getting a huge cheque of $4 million.
This has made an impact on the PGA Tour. To match their rivals, the tour has increased their purse pools as well. The signature and major championships events now have a purse pool of around $20 to $25 million.
McIlroy pointed this out on Wednesday. He claimed that every player irrespective of their tours has benefitted from this. The North Irishman mentioned that he has earned more now than he did back in 2019.
I look at what I made in 2019 before LIV came around and I look at what Iβve made after LIV came around and itβs very different. Like I donβt know what to say, I earn more money now than I did in 2019 and if LIV hadnβt have come around, I donβt know if I would have been able to say that.
Rory McIlroy told the reporters during the Genesis Invitational press conference

In his previous start on the PGA Tour, Rory McIlroy took home $3.6 million. This came after he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am to claim his 27th PGA Tour title. He will now be hoping for back-to-back wins on the tour will playing in the limited-field of the Genesis Invitational.
Phil Mickelson reacts to Rory McIlroy claiming LIV Golf has helped him earn more money
Rory McIlroy had once been a huge critic of LIV Golf. So to see him changing his stance and praising them has left some people shocked. After claiming that the breakaway tour has helped him earn more money, 6-time major champion Phil Mickelson reacted to it.

“The Lefty” was one of them who joined LIV Golf and left the PGA Tour on a massive deal. He has been blasted for this move several times.
However, he has time and again defended his choice. When McIlroy softened his tune towards them last year, Mickelson had praised him for this move.
On Wednesday after McIlroy’s recent comments, the veteran golfer reacted. Taking to his X account, he dropped a simple “thumbs up” emoji, seemingly nodding or approving McIlroy’s words on LIV Golf’s establishment leading to him earning more than he did few years back.

McIlroy also said that having LIV Golfers back and playing together with them will be a good thing for everyone involved. It now remains to be seen when this merger deal closes out eventually and reunifies the game of golf.
