Last week, Rory McIlroy had to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to some back spasms. Ahead of his title defense at The Players Championship this week, the 5-time major champion provided a grim update regarding his health.

Last Thursday, McIlroy started the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Bay Hill Club with an opening round score of 72. In the second round, he fired 5 birdies and was 4-under par after 36 holes.

Before the tee time on Saturday, the Northern Irish golfer made a huge announcement regarding his health. He revealed that he had withdrawn from the tournament due to a back problem.

This marked just the second time in his career that he was forced to leave an event due to injury. The last time he withdrew from an event mid-way through was during the 2013 Cognizant Classic. While he was 7-under par, he had to leave the tournament due to a severe toothache due to wisdom teeth.

On Monday, he opened up about his injury. In a statement, the golfer expressed that his back had been more “stubborn” than he originally thought. He revealed that he would be staying home and arriving late at the event.

The back is being a bit more stubborn than we thought. So I’m staying at home today and tomorrow to continue treatment in South Florida with the hope to travel to Ponte Vedra on Wednesday at some point.

Rory McIlroy said as per Golf Channel

In 2025, McIlroy clinched his second The Players Championship title. He started the final round 4 shots behind the leader, J.J. Spaun. A topsy-turvy final round, which had a massive weather delay as well, saw the two golfers finish level on scores and required a playoff round to determine the winner.

A 3-hole playoff round on Monday saw McIlroy edge out Spaun. It was an emotional victory for him as it came on St. Patrick’s Day.

McIlroy would become just the 8th player in history to win this event twice, having won the tournament in 2019 as well. He would then go on to win the Masters Tournament at the Augusta National a few weeks later and complete the career grand slam.

This year, his participation in The Players Championship is uncertain at the moment. He has been grouped with Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama for the first round. McIlroy has played in this event every time since 2012.

If he does play in the event, he will be looking to become just the second player, after Scottie Scheffler, to defend his title. A win would also see him join Jack Nicklaus as the only other 3-time champion of this tournament.

Rory McIlroy recently spoke out against Jon Rahm for not accepting DP World Tour deal

Ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Rory McIlroy had some tough words for Jon Rahm. The World No.2 would speak out against the LIV Golfer for not accepting the DP World Tour deal.

Earlier in February, the DP World Tour granted “conditional releases” to 8 LIV Golfers who were members of the DP World Tour. Previously, these golfers would be fined for playing in LIV events that conflicted with events on the European circuit.

After the Public Investment Fund (PIF) backed league stopped paying the fines, the players were left to deal with this. The DP World Tour thus introduced “conditional releases” for players, which would not result in fines for competing in LIV events that conflict with their events.

Jon Rahm was not a fan of this and criticized the tour ahead of the LIV Golf Hong Kong event. The Spaniard claimed that the European tour was “extorting” him and the others.

McIlroy, who is also a member of the European Tour, came to their defense. The golfer claimed that the deal offered by them was “generous.

It’s a really generous deal. Like it’s a much softer deal than what Brooks took to come back and play on the PGA Tour. Look, the European Tour can only do so much to accommodate these guys. … I just don’t see what more the European Tour can do to accommodate these guys to retain their membership.

Rory McIlroy told the reporters

Rahm’s participation in the Ryder Cup would come up during this. A European golfer needs to have the DP World Tour membership in order to qualify for the team.

A golfer needs to play in a minimum of 4 DP World Tour events to maintain their membership. According to Rahm, the league is now asking him to play in 6 events.

Speaking of Rahm, he went on to win the LIV Golf Hong Kong event. After a winless run last year, he finally broke through this year and captured a win on the Saudi-backed tour.
