Ahead of the 2025 Genesis Open in Scotland, Rory McIlroy received a special gift. The World No.2 received a customized golf club for the completion of the career grand slam earlier this year.
The Northern Irish golfer had accomplished several things in his career. One thing that he was actively chasing was a win at the Masters Tournament at the Augusta National, which would complete the career grand slam (winning all 4 golf major tournaments).
In April this year, McIlroy finally achieved his dream. After a topsy-turvy 4 rounds of golf, the golfer overcame Justin Rose in the playoff round to clinch the Masters Tournament title and complete the career grand slam.
He did it.

The now 5-time major champion is getting ready for the Genesis Scottish Open. Ahead of this event, his massive achievement in April was celebrated.
While he was practicing on the range ahead of this tournament, Sky Sports Golf on-course commentator John Morgan presented him with a special customized club. The headcover of the club was customized with a depiction of a poppy flower, inspired by McIlroy’s daughter, Poppy.
The club had a description of the 4 majors and when in which year he won them. After accepting the gift, the 36-year-old would smack a tee shot down the middle and seem impressed with it.
McIlroy’s first major triumph came in 2011 when he won the U.S. Open. This came after he suffered a dramatic collapse in the final round of the Masters Tournament earlier that year.
He would win the PGA Championship in 2012 and then win the Open Championship in 2014. That same year, he would claim his 2nd PGA Championship title as well, making it 4 major wins in 4 years.
Since then, he had been on a major championship drought. While he kept on suffering heartbreaks at the Masters Tournament, he recorded 2 runner-up finishes in a row at the U.S. Open in 2023 and 2024. His win at the Augusta National this year ended a decade-long major championship drought.
Golf insider picks Rory McIlroy over Scottie Scheffler for PGA Tour POTY
As the PGA Tour action returns to Europe for the Genesis Open and the Open Championship, there are some discussions regarding who the Player of the Year could be. A golf insider has picked Rory McIlroy over Scottie Scheffler for this award due to his career grand slam achievement.

While McIlroy completed the career grand slam this year, he also won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players Championship. He would become just the 8th player to win The Players Championship twice as he overcame J.J. Spaun in the playoff round.
As for Scheffler, he started off the season slowly but picked up pace later on. The World No.1 first claimed victory in his hometown event as he won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. He later claimed his 3rd major championship win as he won the PGA Championship in May. Like McIlroy, Scheffler has also picked up 3 wins this year, as he would later win the Memorial Tournament.
Speaking on NBC Sports Golf, insider Ryan Lavner was asked about whom he would pick. He would pick McIlroy over Scheffler and expressed that completing the career grand slam will sway some votes from his peers.
Right now, I would give the edge to Rory McIlroy slightly just because of the Players Championship. Keep in mind with the PGA Player of the Year is voted on by the PGA Tour peers, and the historic nature of Rory completing the career grand slam will hold a lot of sway with his peers and it was the best 4 months of his career.
Scheffler has been named the PGA Tour Player of the Year in each of the last 3 seasons. If he manages to win again before the end of the season, there are chances that he could do a four-peat of this award.
