After fighting to make the cut, Rory McIlroy finished T5 while firing a final round score of 64 at the Memorial Park Golf Course in the Texas Children’s Houston Open. After the round, the North Irish golfer revealed an injury concern regarding his right elbow.

McIlroy entered this week’s tournament following a triumph in his previous start. The former World No.1 claimed his 2nd The Players Championship title by beating J.J. Spaun in a three-hole playoff. He skipped the Valspar Championship next week but played in the Houston Open to get some final preparation ahead of the 2025 Masters Tournament.

While speaking with Kira K. Dixon of NBC Sports, McIlroy admitted that he “tweaked” his driver a little bit at the practice range on Saturday. He then informed that his right elbow had been causing him some discomfort and he will get treatment regarding that this week.

My right elbow has been bothering me a little bit, so maybe just get some treatment on that and make sure that’s OK going into Augusta.

The Masters Tournament is one event that McIlroy wants to win. Earlier this year, he claimed that winning the green jacket at the Augusta National was one of this three goals in golf.

McIlroy’s best finish in this event came in the 2022 season when he finished as the runner-up to Scottie Scheffler. In the 2011 event, he held a 4-shot lead after the 54 holes. In the final round, he suffered a heartbreaking collapse and finished 15th in the event.

Months later after this agonizing defeat, he claimed the U.S. Open title. With wins in the PGA Championship and the Open Championship in the following years, this is one event he needs to win to complete the career grand slam. Given his current form, he is the favorite to win the Masters this year and thus an injury will be a major setback for him.

Following his win at The Players Championship, McIlroy overtook Phil Mickelson in the top 10 career earnings standings on the PGA Tour. The $4.5 million pay cheque from that event took his total career earnings to $99.7 million.

In this event, McIlroy almost failed to make the cut and go home empty handed. After making the cut, he fired scores of 65 and 64 over the weekend. This saw him rise up in the standings and finish T5 for the event.

This T5 finish earned him $337,844 from the $9,500,000 purse. This saw cross the $100 million mark in career earnings, becoming just the second golfer after Tiger Woods to cross the nine-digit figure.

In the 262 events he has played on the PGA Tour, McIlroy has won 28 times while making the cut in 231 of them. This has seen him make $100,046,906. Woods on the other hand, has made $120,999,166 from the 378 events he has played in.

The 4-time major champion has not won any major championships since 2014. In the last two editions of the U.S. Open he has suffered heartbreaks while finishing as the runner-up by one shot. With two wins already this year, his putting coach Brad Faxon believes he can win multiple majors this year.

He certainly has enough game to win multiple more Majors and not making just the Masters is the only important thing to me. I have full confidence that he’s going to win more Majors.

Brad Faxon said on Golf Today

Meanwhile, a PGA Tour veteran Brendon de Jonge has claimed that this year of McIlroy will not be considered a successful one if he does not win a major. In one of the event, he will have home advantage as the Open Championship will be played at the Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, adding more pressure on him.
