Now that the Australian Open is done and dusted, the tennis world has already shifted its focus to the next tournaments on the calendar. While many top players have chosen rest and recovery by skipping these events, several others have signed up for them.
The first indoor hardcourt tournament of the season, ABN AMRO Open, also known as the Rotterdam Open, falls under the ATP 500 category. Richard Krajicek is serving as the tournament director. It will be the 53rd edition of the tournament.
World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz is the defending champion. But as expected, he chose to withdraw from the event after his successful run at the Australian Open. The 22-year-old lifted his seventh Grand Slam title after coming from a set down to defeat 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic. The win made him the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam, surpassing the record of Rafael Nadal, who achieved this feat at the age of 24.
Last year in Rotterdam, the Spaniard lifted his career’s first indoor hardcourt title by defeating Alex de Minaur. After Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev also followed suit. The German, who last year finished the Australian Open as the runner-up, suffered a five-set defeat in the semifinals at the hands of Alcaraz. The match, which lasted for five hours and 27 minutes, has become the longest semifinal in the history of the Australian Open.
World No.2 Jannik Sinner, the winner in Rotterdam in 2024, will also not be playing. De Minaur will be playing as the first seed. Other top seeds in the draw are Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alexander Bublik, Daniil Medvedev, Jack Draper, Karen Khachanov, Cameron Norrie, and Tomas Machac.
The draw featured 32 players, eight of whom are the seeded ones, and they have not received first-round byes. Three former champions in the tournament are playing: Wawrinka (2015), Auger-Aliassime (2022), and Medvedev (2023).
Botic van de Zandschulp and Stan Wawrinka have received the wildcards. Alcaraz is replaced by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Jesper de Jong.
