Here is everything you need to know about United Spirits, the company that owns Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have been one of the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) most unfortunate franchises as they have never been able to get their hands on the elusive trophy even once in its 13-year history. The side has always had among the best teams on paper with Indian skipper Virat Kohli at the helm, but something or the other has gone wrong always and prevented them from winning.
The side is one of the original franchises from the inaugural edition of the IPL and has played in every season. Initially, the face of the franchise was Indian businessman Vijay Mallya who is now part of an extradition effort following charges on counts of a plethora of financial crimes. The RCB franchise is owned by United Spirits Limited (USL) which is an alcoholic beverage company that Mallya was also associated with.
What is United Spirits Limited?
United Spirits Limited is the second largest firm in the world that produces alcoholic beverages. As a matter of fact, the company was associated with the RCB franchise right from the first year of the IPL. However, it was Vijay Mallya who was the face of the franchise and hence, USL wasn’t in the limelight. Following Mallya’s stepping down due to his criminal charges, USL gained sole control of RCB.
Those associated with USL are seldom seen during matches featuring RCB and hence, their identity has remained a mystery among fans. It is CEO of USL, Anand Kripalu who represents the franchise in events such as the auction. He is the Chairman of the franchise. Despite RCB’s limited trophy success, USL have profited hugely from the side’s brand image.
RCB will begin their IPL campaign this season on the first day i.e. April 9 against defending champions Mumbai Indians.
