“Wemby robbed it’s rigged” – Rudy Gobert winning his 4th DPOY of his career over Victor Wembanyama and Anthony Davis sparks WILD reactions on social media

Fans feel Victor Wembanyama or Anthony Davis should have won the Defensive Player of the Year award over Rudy Gobert

The Defensive Player of the Year award has finally dropped. Minnesota Timberwolves superstar Rudy Gobert has won it for the 4th time.

The Defensive Player of the Year award was a race between Gobert, Victor Wembanyama, Anthony Davis, and Miami Heat‘s Bam Adebayo. However, what swung the voting in the favor of the Frenchman was the effect of his defense on his team’s overall performance. The Minnesota Timberwolves were consistently the best or one of the best defensive teams in the league. An aspect that helped them stay in the top 3 for almost the entire length of the season.

Naturally, for the team to be at the top in defensive efficiency, the entire team has to be equally good. However, the core of that starts with Gobert. In the times he won the award previously, Gobert was the most dominant rim protector in the league. This season, however, his defense has also moved to the perimeter.

That alone makes it difficult for opposing players to create mismatches on offense. Gobert has changed the way he plays to help his team. This is why he received 72 first-place votes to be the Defensive Player of the Year for a record-tying 4th time.

Fans have mixed opinions about Rudy Gobert’s 4th DPOY win

Basketball fans, however, felt that Gobert has won enough. Instead, the league should have rewarded the defensive prowess shown by San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama. If the team record was a factor, then fans felt the award should have gone to Anthony Davis. The superstar single-handedly affects the defense for the Los Angeles Lakers, and at least took them to the playoffs.

Unhappy fans usually want to vent their frustrations in this day and age of social media. Therefore, they took the chance and posted their reactions. Check some of them below:
