The 2024 NFL season is a first for Russell Wilson. The veteran quarterback finds himself in uncharted waters as it is the first time he is on an NFL team where he is not the starter. Throughout his 11-year career, Wilson has played the role of a backup QB just twice, and that too during the end of his time with the Denver Broncos.

He is yet to take a snap for the Pittsburgh Steelers but this Sunday, things might look a little different. Russell Wilson is expected to suit up for the team’s Week 6 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. However, he will still watch from the sidelines, or at least, that is the assumption so far.

The quarterback was asked a question on the role he intends to play this Sunday by Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. In response, he gave a diplomatic answer and kept the Steelers’ plan under wraps.

That’s a good question. I think for me I’m preparing in my mind to be ready to go. That’s kind of my mentality to help us win, whatever that is.

At the moment, Wilson’s contribution to the Steelers’ 3-2 record this season has come from the sidelines.

Russell Wilson is optimistic about his future with the Pittsburgh Steelers

The quarterback was expected to be the starter until he sustained a calf injury. This led to Justin Fields stepping in, and so far, the Steelers are content with the production they are getting from him. Despite this setback, the veteran quarterback has not given up his optimism of stepping in for the team.

Wilson has been participating in practice and is medically cleared to return. All he requires is an opportunity.

We all want to play. We all want to be out there. I’ve never been in this place that I’m in, and it’s tough. But at the same time, you know there are better days ahead. There are challenges along the way.

The quarterback does not doubt his capabilities. He believes the Steelers are handling his transition back onto the field in the best manner.

Mike Tomlin is in no rush to bring Russell Wilson back onto the field. Justin Fields has been holding the fort down just fine for the Steelers. It would be a risky decision to make an abrupt change at the quarterback position and experiment at this point in the season. Wilson will step in if needed but for now, he continues to get himself back to 100%.

You can always lead in different ways. That’s important. This is a big game for us. We’re 3-2 and we have to focus on playing a really talented Raiders team.

Russell Wilson concluded

Despite losing to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this week, the Pittsburgh Steelers got a solid performance from Justin Fields who had 2 touchdowns and 0 turnovers. This week, the quarterback will be expected to continue his consistent run this season. There is a possibility that Mike Tomlin would give Russell Wilson a few snaps in between to get the veteran some reps in the game.
