Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson made it to seven-time champion Tom Brady’s top three stars of the week following a win over the New York Jets. Wilson, who picked up an injury ahead of the season started for the first time in the Steelers jersey.
The Pittsburgh Steelers headed into the Jets game with a winning record of 4-2. Steelers HC Mike Tomlin, decided to bench Justin Fields for Wilson despite outside pressure against such a move. The game was Wilson’s one chance to show that he’s still the Super Bowl-capable quarterback. Not only did he nail it down, but also silenced those who questioned Mike Tomlin’s abilities.
Tom Brady started listing out three players every week as “Stars of the Week” from the beginning of the season. Wilson is the first Pittsburgh player to make Brady’s list through Week 7. Brady explained his reason for choosing the ex-Seattle Seahawks quarterback in the segment presented by Verizon for NFL on Fox.
In his season opener, the Steelers star completed 16 of 29 passes, covering 264 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Thanks to Wilson’s outstanding performance despite a rusty beginning, the Steelers recorded 37 points. The 37 points are the highest number of points the Steelers have recorded since 2021 when Ben Roethlisberger started for them.
The 264 yards, on the other hand, is the most recorded by a Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback on debut. Wilson proved to have enriched all aspects of the Men of Steel. He nudged the passing attack with big downfield plays and also opened up the ground game. However, Wilson still has some major players to impress as he’s almost confirmed as the Steelers quarterback for Monday’s game against the New York Giants.
Who were the other players in Tom Brady’s Stars of the Week?
Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles filled out Tom Brady’s Stars of the Week in Week 7. The Bills defeated the Tennessee Titans by 24 points to take a comfortable position at the top of the AFC East. Philadelphia Eagles held the divisional rivals New York Giants to just three points while scoring 28 at MetLife Stadium.
After an ugly start, Allen revived the Bills with a stellar performance, recording two touchdowns. The Californian threw 33 passes with 21 completions for 323 yards. He also established an instant chemistry with newcomer Amari Cooper, finding him for a slick touchdown in the game.
Saquon Barkley, who returned to New York after being released in the offseason showed the Giants what they were missing. The Giants, undoubtedly one of the worst teams in the conference, couldn’t hold down their ex-player while he ran riot on them. He rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown and denied himself an attempt to record a new career high. Allen made the list for the first time while Barkley had a previous appearance in Week 3.
