Russell Wilson or Justin Fields? Steelers owner breaks silence on team’s future after yet another failed season
Pittsburgh Steelers have to solve quarterback dilemma between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields before next season.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in this past offseason, they had a plan. The plan was to see the veteran signal caller lead the team to a deep playoff run, whereas the younger QB was to learn and then take over.
However, early on in the season, circumstances saw the opposite happen as Fields led the team to a 4-2 record. Then on Wilson took over and his impact was evident when the team won six of their next seven games.
It looked as if the Super Bowl winning QB had repaired his reputation and was set to earn an extension. Then, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost four straight games to playoff teams. Once that happened, critics lined up to talk about how the 36-year-old struggled to score in the end zone.
After their Wild Card loss to their rivals, the Baltimore Ravens, questions began to arise if the team should move on Wilson. At the time, no one from the franchise commented on the topic. However, when owner Art Rooney II spoke to the media, he was asked about the QB situation.
ESPN quoted that the Steelers owner wanted the team to decide on keeping either one of Wilson or Justin Fields. He did not, however, close the door on both of them staying. But he does not believe the QBs want that either, as they both believe themselves to be capable starters.
Mike Tomlin will have to decide Russell Wilson and Justin Fields’ fate
When Mike Tomlin and GM Omar Khan decided to trade for Fields, they felt he could do better in a different environment. They then decided to sign Russell Wilson to aid his development over the short term.
Fields is a good 11 years younger than his teammate and could get the nod based on his upside. However, if Russell Wilson can clean up his red zone issues, the Pittsburgh Steelers could run it back. However, Tomlin also has to keep in mind what the rest of the team thinks.
After George Pickens‘ reactions, it is evident he was not happy with the way the team played in their closing stretch. That could factor in as they want the dynamic receiver to be an X factor for them. If he is not happy with Wilson throwing him the ball, it could force Tomlin and Khan’s hands.
Going the Justin Fields way could seem logical from all angles. But Art Rooney II still wants the team to look into drafting a QB. This year’s draft class is weak, therefore, they could take a swing at a passer in the later rounds or build up picks to go for it next season.
