Russell Wilson ready to return to Steelers in 2025, says “there’s a lot more to do”

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, despite a disappointing ending to his first year in Pittsburgh after existing in the wild card against the Ravens, wants to return to the Steelers in 2025.

36-year-old Russell Wilson still believes he has enough left in the tank to start for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. Wilson produced a solid game in the wild-card round against the 12-5 Baltimore Ravens, completing 20 passes from 29 tries for 270 yards and 2 touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough for the Steelers to defeat their divisional rivals to advance to the next round.

Even though Wilson showed promise after replacing Justin Fields as the starter, winning five of his first six games, he only won one in the last five. In fact, the Steelers ended the regular season with four straight defeats.

The constant poor results created a sense of concern about whether the Steelers will retain Wilson. On Monday, a day after the disappointing ending against the Ravens, Wilson revealed that he wants to play for them in 2025.

That’s the plan. I love it here and everything else. I think we have a great football team. Obviously, it didn’t end the way we wanted it to, and I think there’s a lot more to do.

Head coach Mike Tomlin remains mum about the entire situation as Wilson revealed that they have not had any conversation about a new contract just yet.

The Steelers should consider all possible paths before deciding on Russell Wilson’s future with the team

Wilson may be in the twilight of his career, but is still a very capable quarterback. In 2024, he completed 18 total touchdowns and 5 interceptions in 11 games, showcasing that he can be a serviceable quarterback for a team. He could walk into a QB-needy franchise and play as the bridge quarterback. However, that doesn’t mean that the Steelers should keep banking their money on the Super Bowl winner.

The Steelers have their answer waiting on the bench for a chance to prove himself. Justin Fields in the early games won (4-2) over the Pittsburgh locals with trademark runs and a swashbuckling playstyle. With the NFL shifting toward the scrambler quarterback, it’s better to make the switch now than to wait a year or two.

More importantly, Fields is 10 years younger than Wilson, which gives the Steelers ample time to build the Ohio State graduate up from scratch. Even though Wilson is among the lowest earners through his one-year, $1.21 million contract, he will enter free agency post-June 1.

Fields earns around $3.2 million from the Steelers, who also hold his fifth-year option in their hands. It makes sense to keep the younger player and build around him.
