Russell Wilson has had an NFL career like no other player. He spent the best years of his career in Seattle, leading the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances and one win. Eventually, the quarterback secured his financial future by signing a huge contract with the Denver Broncos, and after that experiment failed, Wilson redeemed himself last season by playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The veteran will now face another challenge as he gears up to play in the Big Apple. Russell Wilson signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants. The move was surprising, especially since the Giants have the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The presumption since the departure of Daniel Jones has been that the franchise will pick a quarterback and develop him.

Russell Wilson’s signing is unlikely to change the Giants’ draft strategy. Ideally, the franchise should pick a quarterback, allow him to learn from the veteran in the first year, and from 2026 onward, anoint him as the starter. Wilson is fully aware that this scenario is most likely inevitable, however, he has no quarrels with it.

During his inaugural press conference on Wednesday, Russell Wilson made it clear that he is not focused on the Giants’ future plans at the quarterback position. All he cares about is the present.

The great part about professional sports is constant change constant movement. If we draft a quarterback, we’ll make sure he does everything he can to be ready to go and be prepared with his mentality. But for me, I’m focused on winning, what I can do as a quarterback of the New York Giants to help us win and do everything we can to lead. I’m excited. I’ve been gifted with so much in this game in terms of experiences and things I’ve gone through, all the great moments, some tough ones along the way. Also being inside the white lines, that is my most favorite place to be. I’m excited to do that and to rock the New York Giants jersey.

It is hard to root against Russell Wilson. Despite his flaws on the field, he is a class act, a true professional who understands the business and does not take things personally.

The quarterback is limiting his focus to things that are in his control, that is, his game. If a rookie joins the locker room to compete for his job, Wilson will play his role and ensure that he provides the right guidance. For now, the veteran is grateful for one thing: he gets a chance to play football for one more season.

Russell Wilson’s contract with the Giants is performance-based

The one-year deal is valued at $21 million. However, there is a catch to it. The majority of the money is contingent upon Wilson fulfilling certain obligations. He will receive $10.5 million in the form of guaranteed money, but apart from that, the rest is all incentive-based.

The Giants have structured the deal in such a manner that up to $7.5 million will be based on the number of snaps he takes, his performance, and his ability to lead the team to the postseason.

The contract has an incentive of up to $176,500 per game, a total of $3 million that can be earned based on team wins and contingent on Wilson taking at least 50 percent of total offensive snaps. So effectively, the maximum he stands to earn would be up to $15-$17 million. To earn the entire $21 million would be nothing short of a miracle because the Giants would need to go undefeated the entire season for him to be entitled to that amount.

The question is which direction the New York Giants head toward in the Draft. The odds indicate that Shedeur Sanders is a favorite but Cam Ward is right up there next to him. As the countdown to the draft begins, the draft stock of players constantly fluctuates, and it is hard to predict until draft day.
