Pittsburgh Steelers have the highest count of Super Bowl trophies besides the New England Patriots. But that golden era ended more than a decade ago and they haven’t been able to win a playoff game since 2016. Russell Wilson seems to have ignited the flame of Super Bowl hope once again in the hearts of Pittsburgh fans, as he became the team starter.
After a long delay, head coach Mike Tomlin officially named Wilson as the starting quarterback for Week 1 of the coming 2024 season. While talking to the media afterward on Wednesday, the veteran quarterback revealed his high plans to win the grand Super Bowl trophy–the second of his career and seventh of Pittsburgh.
I know I’m ready, we’re ready, and we’re looking forward to playing. The goal is to help the Pittsburgh Steelers win a seventh trophy. I came here to be a Pittsburgh Steeler, help us win another Super Bowl.Russell Wilson said
He also expressed high confidence in the team’s ability to win the Vince Lombardi trophy. After his fiasco in Denver, the nine-time Pro Bowler has a lot to prove, given the Steelers put their faith in him. Wilson shared viewing every season as a chance to prove himself.
For the starting position, Wilson has outdone quarterback Justin Fields, whom the Steelers added this offseason and was also advocated for the position by analysts.
Mike Tomlin teases potential plays for Justin Fields
From the very start, head coach Tomlin has given weightage to experience above everything else and that’s why, when it finally came the time to make the decision, he decided to go forward with Wilson. Meanwhile, Fields is said to be better suited at the backup position. But that doesn’t mean Tomlin isn’t open to using Fields’ talent in certain plays.
That's certainly on the table, but I'm not going to get into many details regarding that or things of that nature because it doesn't help us from a competitive advantage standpoint.Mike Tomlin told the reporters on Wednesday

Tomlin appreciated the former Chicago Bears quarterback’s exceptional mobility and shared that the team intends to take full advantage of it, even though they have named Wilson as the starting QB. Fields’ performance in the preseason has been better than Wilson’s, given the former played 56 snaps and completed 19 of 27 attempts for 199 yards, but the latter played 25 snaps and completed 10 of 12 attempts for 73 yards.
