Russell Wilson, 35-year-old Steelers’ quarterback, isn’t bothered about what people think of him. The statement comes amid his heated fight for the QB1 spot with Justin Fields in the Pittsburgh camp.

The former Broncos player joined the Steelers earlier this year after Denver released him. Although Wilson is listed as the starting QB, his contract is currently for a single year for a veteran’s minimum.

Russell Wilson hasn’t had the best start with the next phase in his career. The 9-time Pro Bowl QB, shunning the calf injury concerns, debuted for the Steelers against the Bills preseason game. However, he didn’t have the best of the debuts. Wilson shared reps with Justin Fields, who fared marginally better. The injury did slow him down.

I never had it to keep me going. I’ve never been — I don’t know why — I’ve just never been worried about what other people think. I think ultimately I focus on, as I mentioned to you guys — obviously my faith means everything to me.
Russell Wilson said to reporters on Wednesday (H/T: NBC Sports)

However, the fact remains, that Wilson hasn’t had a good time for some time now. Due to the issues with the front office, Wilson only started 15 games for the Denver Broncos before being released. As he also stated, he will play the preseason finale against the Lions, It is important that Wilson is playing the best version of him.

Russell Wilson thanks God for choosing him

Wilson’s competition is fierce. Experts including Dan Orlovsky are suggesting Justin Fields to start in the first game of the regular season. Fields has performed better in the camp and preseason and is a much younger QB than the veteran Russell Wilson.

Nonetheless, even amidst the uncertainty with his starting role, Wilson, an ardent believer of God, cites that God chose him for this role. He feels that out of the many people in the world, he is grateful to be one of the 32 men who get to do this, to play the game of football.

God chose me for this, and He chose me to play this game. I’m one of 32 men in the world that get to do what I do, get to play this game every day. And you know, there’s eight billion people in the world, and for whatever reason, I get to be one of these guys.

As the Steelers head into the preseason finale against the Lions, the former Super Bowl winner would be on the lookout to run the offense and score in the red area and earn a win after the two disappointing losses.
