One of the points of discussion over the last few years in NASCAR has been the absence of a Superstar in the sport. In the 90’s and early 2000’s, when the sport was at it’s peak, the sport has stars such as Jeff Gordan and Rusty Wallace who were able to pull a lot of causal and passionate fans to races. But now the sport doesn’t have such personality who could have a massive impact outside the constraints of the sport.
Despite these facts, reigning Cup champion Ryan Blaney have a entirely different opinion. He reckons everyone in the sport are Superstars and are special on their own right. The No:12 Team Penske Ford Mustang driver claimed that all the driver on the grid have been successful with how they have approached things.
Blaney went on to point out that different drivers have different approach towards how they market themselves, as some of them branch out to activities outside the race track while other stay with in racing community to grow their stardom. The defending champion seems really optimistic about the brand value of the NASCAR drivers.
We’re all superstars. Every driver. Everyone is special in their own right. Everyone is successful with how they’ve approached everything. Some branch out more than others in different aspects outside the racetrack and some decide to stick around the racetracks and grow their stardom there with the fans at the racetrack, so everyone approaches it differently.Ryan Blaney told the Kansas City Star.
Ryan Blaney said how all 36 drivers can be Superstars
While talking about how to make racers stars, Blaney pointed out that it’s impossible to have Superstars like Jeff Gordan again as it is impossible for drivers to win 10 races or more in a season and absolutely dominate the field. Nowadays star value is based on how race teams can market all of their driver, not just one or two picks.
It starts with success on the racetrack and then the organizations marketing these drivers with how great they are at what they do, and then the drivers have to be willing to do it and be in that role. You don’t need to pluck out one person. There are a lot of us here and you can push it, you can make 36 superstars. I think that’s definitely possible.Ryan Blaney said.
The champion does have a point that with the right marketing strategy, NASCAR team can make their driver Superstars in the digital era. At the same time, it would be impossible to make all 36 driver Superstars as Blaney claimed as well, as there will always be a selective bunch who would be capable of attracting more fans.
