The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will start ahead of their first-round pick from two years ago, Anthony Richardson.
Richardson, who was drafted fourth overall in 2023, has only played 15 games in two years due to inconsistency and injuries. In 15 starts, Richardson has completed 176-for-348 and thrown 2,391 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 635 yards and 10 touchdowns.
However, as a quarterback, he has also thrown 13 interceptions in almost as many starts. In addition to the inconsistency, he has also failed to demonstrate that he can maintain his health. In fact, the Indianapolis Colts’ GM did mention that one of the reasons behind signing Jones was the above fact.
In an earlier take, ESPN Analyst Stephen A. Smith noted that the management has lost their faith in Richardson. He also called it a bad move from the organisation. Amid these statements and the emergence of a strained relationship between Richardson and Jones, Deiric Jackson, Richardson’s agent’s heaped on a bit of an idea that the player has some impulsive plans as well.
One of the former athletes of the sport, Ryan Clark, shared a similar sentiment on a panel at ESPN’s widely popular broadcast, Get Up, that the player’s time in Indy has come to an end. Clark claimed that the young quarterback has lost all his support in the building.
His time is done with the Colts… because he lost support in the building. Somebody in the building had to say that this is our guy, I believe we can develop him.
Clark quipped
"His time is done with the Colts."

Louis Riddick, who shared the platform with Clark, dug into the whys of the Colts rooting for Jones. Riddick noted that Richardson brought it on himself with his decline in production, inconsistency, injury concerns, and lack of leadership on the field.
Anthony is not without responsibility in this. And he knows that, too. He has spoken to that, too. And this is a hell of a hard lesson for him to have to learn… He’s going to have to do some serious soul searching about, ‘How do I perfect my process, so I never have to face this, feel this way again?’ Because it’s got to be brutal.

Anthony Richardson has markets other than the Indianapolis Colts amid trying times
After a rookie campaign that was cut short by injuries, the Indianapolis Colts quarterback is showing noticeable growth in both command and confidence. While the Colts remain steadfast that Anthony Richardson’s development is not tied to a single “make-or-break” season, NFL circles have begun to quietly consider what his trade value might look like.

In a recent ESPN report, Richardson’s agent Deiric Jackson hasn’t acknowledged any intent to move on from the young passer, but executives around the league have started to weigh in on what kind of market he could command. One AFC executive told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that Richardson’s stock is complicated.
The play and the injuries have been bad enough that it’s a hard one, but if a team had a real need and since he has plenty of team control left, he should have something.
With Richardson under contract through 2026 and carrying a fifth-year option into 2027, any acquiring team would have flexibility and time to mold him into a long-term solution. Jeremy Fowler also noted that a potential comparison could be Trey Lance’s trade from San Francisco to Dallas, which yielded a fourth-round pick.
However, unlike Lance, Richardson’s combination of athleticism and remaining contract years may attract a broader range of suitors looking beyond the immediate 2025 season. For now, the Colts insist Richardson’s future is in Indianapolis, the Crossroads of America. Still, as quarterback depth charts around the league shuffle, his name could quietly remain on the radar of teams planning for 2026 and beyond.
