Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes football team came up short in their quest to win the BIG Ten Championship trophy with a loss against the Indiana Hoosiers. The defeat was not on the cards for the Buckeyes. As the reigning college football champions, the Buckeyes were favored to clinch their first conference title since 2020. However, the Hoosiers proved the narrative wrong.
Day’s Buckeyes went into Saturday’s game at the Lucas Oil Stadium on the back of a massive win against rivals Michigan. That win not only secured their spot at number one in the final AP and college football rankings but also skyrocketed the players’ confidence.
Meanwhile, the Hoosiers thumped Purdue 56-3 in the final game of the league phase before setting foot at the Lucas Oil Stadium. It was Curt Cignetti‘s first-ever appearance at a Division 1 conference title game as a head coach.
Cignetti got the better of Day and extended the Buckeyes’ search for their 40th conference title. Speaking with reporters after the 13-10 defeat, Ryan Day noted that his team wanted to win against Indiana.
We are not gonna make any excuses about any of this. We wanted to win this game. The guys had a good week of practice, but at the end of the day, we came up short. So, we gotta get back and figure out why that happened, what the issues were, and get it fixed. [Because] the season’s not over, got a lot of football ahead of us, and hopefully we can use this as a way to get better as we head into the playoffs.

Indiana ended its conference championship drought with the victory. The Hoosiers last tasted a BIG Ten championship title victory in 1967 (required a three-way tie breaker between Indiana, Minnesota, and Purdue).

With a little over two minutes left until the final whistle, the Buckeyes trailed the Hoosiers by three points. They were presented with a great opportunity to draw level on points with a field goal.

Buckeyes kicker Jayden Fielding stepped up to take care of FG duty. However, Fielding pulled his kick wide left from 27 yards. Indiana held on to secure a famous victory.

This must be the worst feeling in sports. A kick to decide the champion, and he missed it. The founder of Barstool Sports and staunch Michigan supporter, Dave Portnoy, posted an NSFW tweet taunting the Ohio State fans after Fielding missed the kick.
What a pu** move kicking the fg on 4th and 1. And then an absolute choke job kick.

The miss took everyone by surprise, because they had watched Fielding successfully converting FGs from that distance. Fielding was 15-for-17 prior to the Indiana game, 13-for-17 on FGs, and 73-for-73 on extra points.
Portnoy mocked Ohio State and its fans in a different tweet after the referee blew the final whistle.
Same old Ohio State. Get them in a close game and they roll over. No guts. Congrats to Indiana on a great season. Going undefeated in the conference is something only great teams do. Will Ohio ever win the Big 10 again? I can’t wait to hear the excuses.
