A former Buffalo Bill spoke out in support of Josh Allen after he missed a two-point conversion that proved to be the turning point in the team’s Week 17 loss. The Bills dropped to second in the AFC East and seventh in the conference.
Sean McDermott and offensive coordinator Joe Brady came under fire for the risky play that didn’t pay off. The Bills needed one point to match the Philadelphia Eagles‘ total. Kicking the extra point after Allen’s second rushing touchdown of the game made sense with fewer than ten seconds left until the final whistle.
McDermott and Brady opted to go for the win rather than extending the contest to overtime. Allen missed his receiver inside the end zone, and the Eagles won the game by just one point.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, who played four seasons for the Bills, argued that coaches made the right choice by letting Allen go for the two-point.
I think you leave the game in the hands of Josh Allen, not the kicker who’s been there for 2 weeks.

The Bills’ kicking situation may have forced the Bills to rely on Josh Allen to go for the two-point try
Fitzpatrick’s words make sense when fans read about the Bills’ kicking situation. The Bills have shuffled through three kickers in 2025. They started the year with Tyler Bass, followed by signing Matt Prater (one of the league’s oldest kickers), and most recently added Michael Badgley.

The reason behind the kicker carousel is not because Bass or Prater are bad kickers, it is because both have been injured. Bass underwent surgery on his left hip/groin, and Prater suffered a quadriceps injury.

It left the Bills with no other option but to find a different placekicker. On December 12, they signed Badgley, 30, to the practice squad. Badgley spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers (from 2018 to 2020) before bouncing around the league with the Titans, Bears, Colts, and Lions.
Badgley was part of the Colts in the early part of the season. He came with a decent 83.2 field goal percentage. The Bills activated him before the Browns game in Week 16.
However, according to the Democrat and Chronicle, the Bills cut Badgley just 24 hours after the Eagles game. His extra point attempt following Allen’s first touchdown was blocked by the Eagles’ special teams, so it was understandable that McDermott and Brady wanted to avoid a repeat.

However, Allen didn’t do justice by botching the two-point try. The reigning NFL MVP blamed himself for the costly miss.
I just missed. Rolling left, I’ve got to get him a better ball. It just comes down to us executing, making one more play than they did. And obviously you saw that we didn’t make that last play… I didn’t make that last play.
Josh Allen said
McDermott clarified that if the chance arrived again, he wouldn’t hesitate to hand the ball back to Allen.

The defeat ended the Bills’ dominance in the AFC East. They are now 11-5 and the AFC seventh seed. Allen is barely in the MVP race. He must deliver a world-class performance against the 3-13 New York Jets in Week 18 to have any hope of overtaking Drake Maye or Matthew Stafford in the MVP race.
