Derrick James has been a renowned boxing trainer who has now worked with boxers like Anthony Joshua and Errol Spence Jr. Recently, he joined Ryan Garcia‘s training camp for the Devin Haney fight, which has kept him in the limelight. As such, Garcia has grown quite attached to his new trainer, which has prompted him to take a dig at Spence.
James and Spence separated after the Terence Crawford fight, and since then, Spence has remained inactive. Details about this have been vague, but it appears that they are on good terms with each other. However, KingRy recently revealed the actual truth about this during a live session on X’s space. The topic initially started after the Crawford vs. Spence fight was brought up. Garcia then stated:

He accused him of not paying James after the Crawford fight. KingRy also stated that this was business, but Spence’s actions were not acceptable. Garcia also mentioned how James has been there for Spence throughout his entire career.
The 25-year-old also brought up how he paid James more than he earned in his last fight. This referred to his fight with Oscar Durate since James joined his team after the Gervonta Davis fight.

Spence Jr. hasn’t boxed since July 2023, when he suffered the first defeat of his professional career. The fight was widely regarded as one of the greatest of the last thirty years. Furthermore, the two men jostled for the vacant WBC welterweight championship. It ended with a third-round TKO by Crawford.
After the fight, Spence Jr. mentioned that he intended to fight Crawford again and stated that he would stick with James. However, this changed after James allegedly asked for a percentage of the PPV from the fight. Furthermore, James recently spoke about his split with Spence:

Hence, the trainer confirmed that they are not in touch anymore. He also mentioned how an individual has to look forward without looking back so that they can move on. James also asserted that he believes Errol Spence Jr. is in a good place mentally.
