For any athlete, the goal is to perform at the biggest stage possible. For athletes at the Paris Olympics 2024, they have reached the biggest stage of them all. But then they try to take it to another level and win a medal. Then their names become etched in history. Team USA swimmer Ryan Murphy achieved that again during his solo event. But his wife had something better in store for him.
Ryan Murphy took part in the 100m backstroke finals in this Olympics, hoping to add to his medal tally. The 29-year-old performed as expected, as he swam home to finish 3rd, sealing the Bronze. After receiving the bronze medal, as he and the rest of the medal winners walked around the pool as part of a victory lap, he saw his wife Bridget Konttinen, holding up a sign that read:
“RYAN, It’s a Girl!”
A smile broke out on the face of the multiple-time medal winner, which eventually grew out to a laugh. Naturally, this was a bigger win than he achieved in the race.
A former Olympic record holder in the same category, the Florida native and his wife are expecting their first child around January. So far, he did not know the gender of their child. However, it seems, his wife and his family decided to surprise him with where he would be at his best.
The Paris Olympics 2024 sure has brought out some great as well as not-so-great sides so far. But this beats them all by a mile. A gender reveal bringing out an even bigger smile than winning an Olympic medal is something to cherish.
Ryan Murphy’s to dedicate medals to his unborn daughter
Reporters at the Paris Olympics 2024 seeing Ryan Murphy’s double win of the day asked him about the gender reveal. A still stunned Murphy replied as quoted through USA Today:
So, I'm having a baby girl in January, so that was Bridget's gender reveal to me. So that's really, really exciting.Ryan Murphy at the Paris Olympics 2024
When asked if he was dedicating his latest Olympic bronze to his unborn daughter, he said:
Absolutely. Everything is going to be dedicated to that little girl.Ryan Murphy at the Paris Olympics 2024
These words confirm his feelings of jubilation. Knowing that his yet-to-be-born daughter is now an integral part of the Olympics.
Ryan Murphy has come a long way. From dreaming of competing in the Olympic Games since he was seven years old, to tallying seven medals including this one, and establishing himself as one of the best male swimmers Team USA has. He can still win a further two medals at these games.
Today he can enter his name into the 200m backstroke finals. Then there is also a chance that he can compete in the 4x100m men’s medley relay to be held on August 4th. If he wins both, he can dedicate all three medals to his would-be-born daughter and start a new chapter in his life.
