Sabrina Ionescu has ties to two NBA superstars, the late Kobe Bryant and Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, from whom she has learnt a lot and implemented in her game.

That saw the star guard help the New York Liberty close out games against the Minnesota Lynx during their 2024 WNBA title-winning run in style.

After their 1st-ever championship win, the franchise reinforced its squad despite losing two important pieces to the expansion draft and injury. There was hope that they would be favorites to repeat, and their early-season form confirmed their intentions.

After that 10-game winning streak, their season began to unravel. Injuries to Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart, and to Ionescu herself became their undoing, as they stumbled down the leaderboard.

The team looked out of sorts, and eventually, they exited the postseason in the 1st round at the hands of eventual Finalists, the Phoenix Mercury. Soon after, head coach Sandy Brondello was fired, as the top brass felt the team needed a new leader.

They searched long and hard, as they required someone who has experienced winning, has been around superstars, and has the knowledge to potentially be great over time.

For that, they traveled to the opposite end of the country and signed Golden State Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco as their next head coach.

Sabrina Ionescu reached out to Stephen Curry during this hiring process to get his thoughts on Chris DeMarco.

This revelation should not be surprising, as Sabrina Ionescu has leaned on the greatest 3-point shooter in NBA history for many aspects of her basketball career. Getting his thoughts on the next head coach may have helped the Liberty hire him.

Chris DeMarco helped Stephen Curry and Warriors win 4 NBA titles

Chris DeMarco has been with the Golden State Warriors since 2012. That means he has witnessed the time when Mark Jackson started the rebuild.

Then, under Steve Kerr, the now 40-year-old has helped the franchise win its four NBA championships. Along with that, DeMarco is also the head coach of the Bahamian National Men’s Basketball team, which he led to a famous victory against Argentina back in 2023.

That experience will be crucial for the New York Liberty, who want to maximize the roster they currently have. His time with the Warriors has possibly enabled the coach to understand and learn how to navigate life amongst superstars.

The Liberty essentially has four in its starting lineup. Then, they have some international players in the form of Marine Johannes, Leonie Fiebich, and Emma Meesseman, who are superstars in their own right.

To handle the likes of Sabrina Ionescu and those stars with ease was a must-have for their next head coach, and in Chris DeMarco, Liberty GM Jonathan Kolb may have found his best bet.

Chris DeMarco will be tasked to help Sabrina Ionescu and Liberty return as champions

Last season, when the New York Liberty struggled, many felt the team was over-reliant on its Big 4, Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Natasha Cloud, despite possessing strong role players on its bench.

That explains why they struggled when Stewart and Jones were out injured. Chris DeMarco will be tasked to ensure the team that Kolb puts together has it in them to stay at the top of the leaderboard. Another slide down the table could result in catastrophic results. At a time when two more teams are joining, the Liberty will lose at least 2 players to the expansion draft.

Despite that, they should be able to resign Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, who was instrumental in their 2024 title run, while also replenishing with the plethora of free agents available this offseason.
