Knicks superfan Spike Lee high-fived New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu during WNBA playoffs
In last season’s WNBA Championship battle, the New York Liberty suffered a heartbreak. This season, they came into the season with a renewed vigor. That drive saw them finish the regular season as the best team and head into the playoffs as Championship favorites. After sweeping the Atlanta Dream in the first round of the WNBA playoffs, Sabrina Ionescu revealed how she dominated game 2.
New York Knicks superfan Spike Lee was in attendance as he saw Ionescu dominate the game. When asked during the post-game press conference about her interaction with the Director, Ionescu opened up on it.
Sabrina Ionescu ended up leading all scorers with a 36-point, 9-assist effort. Even if it was a joke, at least the New York sports fan’s presence was enough to motivate the former Oregon star.
The basketball 3-point contest record holder was on a mission all night. Her play showed her desire as she nailed all her free throws and did not rely solely on her three-point scoring. Those fouls came from drives to the basket as she brought out different shots to push the game away from the Dream.
She also dished out assists to her teammates in their series-sweeping Game 2 win. Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones chimed in with 13 and 20 points respectively. Now the star-studded New York Liberty have a few days rest before facing WNBA Championship rivals Las Vegas Aces.
Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart to resume WNBA Finals rivalry with A’ja Wilson
Last season, the New York Liberty struggled with fatigue as they fell to the depleted Las Vegas Aces. This time around, none of the starting five played basketball abroad. They focused on rejuvenating their tired bodies in their bid to win the Liberty’s first WNBA title. But they know firsthand what A’ja Wilson and her teammates are capable of.
Last season, they used their grit to win their 2nd straight title. This time, the two were expected to resume their rivalry in the Finals. But the Aces lost a few games pegging them down to 4th in the standings, one of those being to the Liberty. To three peat, the Aces will have to pull something out of their bag. Expect A’ja Wilson to lead the charge in that department.
This time it is a five-game series. Giving both sides ample time to figure out their playoff opponents. Sabrina Ionescu wants that title. So does A’ja Wilson after a dominating MVP run. The first game tips off on September 29th.
