The beauty of different sports is that one always comes across beautiful gestures once in a while in and around the sport. Such was the case in the WNBA league as they have their all-star weekend this week, with a beautiful gesture unfolding in front of the sporting community’s eyes, led by none other than New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu.

Sabrina is a proper champion on and off the court. She showcased her champion mentality when she won the 3-point skills challenge at the All-Star Weekend on Friday. However, this is not the reason she was trending. Ionescu was trending for other reasons, one of them being much wholesome and heartwarming to the WNBA and the NBA fans in general.

The Liberty Star was awarded $62,575 for winning the event, but the surprising part is that she will not be taking home any of the amount. Following the event, Ionescu informed the media that she and Sonia Citron, a rookie with the Washington Mystics, would split the prize. Ionescu said that even though she was still getting adjusted to the WNBA in general, she appreciated Citron’s bravery for attending the event.

This was the main gesture the Liberty Star has been making headlines for. To add to this, Ionescu also sacrificed the other half of her prize money by giving it out to charity, leaving the fans in complete admiration over the NY star.

With her winning score of 30, she had the second-highest performance in the WNBA 3-point competition, only surpassed by her 2023 performance, in which she scored 37. In Saturday’s WNBA All-Star Game, Ionescu and Team Clark(Caitlin Clark) will try to win another game.

Fans applaud Sabrina Ionescu for her heartwarming gesture at the All-Star event

It is not every day that one gets to see one of the best players in women’s basketball give away all her prize money from the skills challenge that she won to charity and her opponent. This is exactly what Sabrina Ionescu did on Friday(as mentioned above), leaving fans stunned in the process. For many years, the NY star has been subject to immense hate and criticism from the WNBA fanbase.

It’s safe to say that the fans’ perception of the Liberty star has completely changed after coming across her recent gestures. The majority of the fans took to various social media apps and sites to put forward their views on this matter. One fan wrote on X, “Remember when media tried to drag her on this app for not doing the contest last year….I wonder if it ever occurred to them she wanted to give her colleagues a shot at the prize money that could use it more than her.” Check out some of the reactions below:

ESPN’s Alexa Philippou reports that Ionescu would contribute half of the prize money to SI20, while she will give Sonia Citron half of her prize money. The SI20 Foundation wants to provide equal opportunity in sports for young people from all backgrounds in order to build stronger communities and connections.

Sabrina Ionescu shared her thoughts after clinching 3-PT skills challenge at the All-Star event

With each year passing by, the WNBA has been gaining more traction and interaction from the basketball community in general, thanks to stars like Sabrina Ionescu, Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Breanna Stewart, and many more for their relentless mentality and hard work on the court for their respective teams, resulting in many fans tuning in to watch the WNBA over the recent years.

Given that, the New York Liberty star recently clinched the 3-point skills challenge on Friday at the ongoing All-Star event, as mentioned above. She shared her opinions after winning the challenge for the second time in 2 years.

I feel like we put on a great show. We feed off the energy here and super excited to bring All-Star weekend here to Indy. I’m pretty disappointed. I felt like I missed a few easy ones late there that I feel like I could have made, so I’m sorry about that.
