Sachin Tendulkar was among the many cricketing stars, who condoled the tragic stampede that occurred outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. This happened following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s 2025 IPL triumph. Thousands of RCB fans had gathered near the venue, in celebration of the team’s maiden IPL title.

RCB, one of the IPL’s most popular franchises, claimed its first-ever IPL title in the competition’s 18-year history. The Rajat Patidar-led side defeated Punjab Kings in the final by six runs, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, leaving supporters overjoyed. The team management, following the impressive victory, announced a special celebration for fans in the city of Bengaluru, a day after.

The day-long celebration program included a felicitation ceremony conducted by the Chief Minister of Karnataka, P. Siddaramaiah, followed by another ceremony at the Chinnaswamy and an open bus parade through the streets of Bengaluru. The team, through its social media accounts, urged fans to be present in and around the Chinnaswamy Stadium, for the day’s events.

However, the celebrations turned chaotic, as an overwhelming number of fans, beyond the expected numbers, reached the venue to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars. The event drew an estimated two lakh fans to the stadium, well beyond its capacity of a 35,000 seats. Overcrowding and a stampede-like situation outside the venue, resulted in the tragic death of 11 people, while nearly 50 others were gravely injured.

Several visuals showed fans trying to scale the walls of the stadium. Police even resorted to mild lathi-charge in order to control the overflowing crowd. Chaos also unfolded near the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha, where CM Siddaramaiah felicitated the players and support staff, as thousands of them flocked the road and got on top of walls and landings nearby in anticipation of catching a glimpse.

The unfortunate incident prompted many cricketing stars to express grief, including Indian cricket great Sachin Tendulkar. The 52-year-old took to social media to share his condolences, exclaiming that he was left shocked by the tragic stampede as well as praying for the lives lost.

Ex-RCB stars Yuvraj Singh and Anil Kumble also extended their sympathies, with the World Cup winner describing the incident as ‘unimaginable’.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in a social media statement, also expressed deep condolences over the loss of lives, while stretching its hand in support of the aggrieved families. The team also added that the event schedule was promptly altered as soon as the franchise was informed about the stampede outside the stadium, including the cancellation of the open-bus parade, that was announced earlier.

Preliminary reports suggest that a temporary slab near the stadium, collapsed under the weight of people who had climbed on it, triggering panic, which eventually led to the fatal stampede. Meanwhile, the BCCI also offered condolences to the families who lost their members in the tragic stampede.

He exclaimed that the board would be looking to formulate guidelines for future celebrations.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal also took a dig at the Karnataka State Cricket Association and the local authorities for failing to manage to crowd, even referencing India’s 2024 T20 triumph parade. Meanwhile, RCB and KSCA have announced a compensation of INR 25 lakhs, for the families of the deceased.
