A heartfelt message written by former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar urges the people of India to support the Indian contingent that will be going for the Tokyo Paralympics being held from 24th August to 5th September. India will be sending its largest ever contingent to the Paralympics this year, 54 athletes participating in over 9 sports.

“It is time for the Paralympics and I would like to appeal to all Indians to get behind our contingent of 54 athletes in Tokyo,” he said in a note according to TOI. He went ahead and said that it was not only about the medal winners, but that the country must support all the 54 athletes going to the Paralympics. “We need to celebrate the process and not simply the outcome. That’s when real change will happen in our sport,” he wrote.

He said that India can become a much better country if all its citizens supported its Tokyo Paralympics athletes the same way they cheered on the athletes going to the Olympics. He said that their journey was eye-opening and inspirational, as these athletes showed the highest level of passion, commitment and determination.

“I have always believed that these women and men are not athletes with special abilities. Rather, they are women and men of extraordinary ability who are all real-life heroes for each one of us,” said Tendulkar.

Sachin Tendulkar hoped that the Indian contingent would get back even more medals than it did from Rio, where India won 4 medals at the Paralympics. He said that if the contingent wins 10 medals as predicted, it will be a huge swing towards promoting sports in India. Having said that, Tendulkar went on to say that he would support and watch all athletes with equal enthusiasm and interest.

“I have been delighted to see India embrace the Paralympics this year. The very welcome initiatives of the government and corporates working in partnership and on their own in different aspects of extending support to our sports persons are all steps in the right direction,” he praised.

Finally Tendulkar finished his message on a note that every Indian should follow. “To conclude – I will watch the Paralympics with equal intensity like I did for the Olympics. I urge all of you to do so and cheer for our beloved India.”
