After a rather sedate morning for India on day 3 of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, the Indians had something to cheer about as Neha Thakur secured a second position in the Girl’s Dinghy ILCA4 category of the sailing competition. It takes India’s medal tally to 12 at the ongoing games and the first medal coming from the sport of sailing.
Neha Thakur earned a total of 32 points from 11 races, but her net score of 27 helped her earn the second spot behind the eventual gold medalist from Thailand, Noppassom Khunboonjan. Singapore’s Kiera Marie Carlyle completed the podium as she finished third with a net score of 28. With this India has opened its account in sailing competitions at Hangzhou, and more are expected to come as the competition progresses.
In sailing, the competitor’s worst score from all of the races is subtracted and the net score determined from it is used to adjudge the ranking of the sailor. Neha’s worst race was the fifth one where she finished fifth and after deducting that from her total score, Neha finished runner-up with a net score of 27. This is India’s first medal in Sailing at the 2022 Asian Games.
Adhvait Menon finishes eighth in Boy’s Dinghy
In the Boy’s Dinghy ILCA4 category, Adhvait Menon of India finished a lowly eighth after he retired mid-way from the eleventh and the final race to finish with a total of 89 points (net score of 76). Thailand’s Weka Bhanubandh clinched gold with a net score of just 13 in 11 races. Singapore’s Issac Goh (net score of 21) and Muhammad Asnawi Iqbal (net score of 42) won the silver and the bronze medals, respectively.
While India has opened its tally in sailing, it surely is not going to be the lone medal India would be bringing from this sport in the current edition of the Games as they are in the fray in other events too to finish inside the top-3. The likeliest of them looks to be Vishnu Saravanan in the men’s dinghy ILCA7 category. The Tokyo Olympian was occupying the third spot after the completion of 9 races with a net score of 31.
