Justin Herbert almost had his leg yanked out of him in the first half by a Saints player. Luckily, his Chargers teammates were nearby to save him from another injury.

It was a new day, but the Chargers’ story remained the same. They were barely getting by on offense, and it wasn’t for lack of trying. With so many injuries and an offseason clearance, Jim Harbaugh’s team is left with the bare minimum.

Herbert tried to find one of his offensive weapons during the first half. However, as usual, there weren’t any available near the red zone, so he switched to trickery.

When the Saints’ pressure became too hot to handle, the 26-year-old dumped the ball off to running back JK Dobbins. Right after the pass, the Saints defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd pounced on the shot caller’s leg.

Harbaugh saw his quarterback being dragged down, and Shepherd kept the chokehold on his legs. Chargers’ veteran defensive lineman Bradley Bozeman was on hand to save the day. Bozeman forced Shepherd off from Herbert before he could deal any serious blow.

The first half ended with both sides scoring in the single digits (Saints 5-9 Chargers). Dobbins scored the only touchdown of the game so far.

The Chargers need more weapons for Justin Herbert

Harbaugh’s team averages 300 total offensive yards and 17.7 points per game, which is 25th in the league and has scored just 9 combined touchdowns all season (before playing the Saints). In comparison, they are 17th in rushing offense with 116.3 yards per game. It means they are running the ball often, as Dobbins’ 81 carries for 438 yards and 3 touchdowns suggest.

This is due to the inexperience of their receivers. None of their wide receivers, whether Josh Palmer, Quentin Johnston, or Simi Fehoko, have crossed the 200-yard barrier.

Its rookie tight end Ladd McConkey who leads the charts with 24 catches for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns. Also, the Chargers offense has dropped a combined 14 balls (second most behind the Jets).

This clearly proves that Justin Herbert needs some quality receivers whom he can target. Amari Cooper and Cooper Kupp are off the trade board, but there are a couple whom Harbaugh can look into. Panthers Diontae Johnson and Jaguars Christian Kirk are two receivers whom he can target before the November 5 deadline closes.

As for now, the Chargers have to work with what they have. Herbert so far this season has completed 106 passes for 1164 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 1 interception (before week 8).
