The third ODI between India and England produced the thrills as the hosts nearly bottled what was a very strong position thanks to the heroics of Sam Curran. Having lost 8 wickets and a huge amount of runs to get, England seemed down and out as Mark Wood joined Curran. However, the latter started growing in confidence and took the bowlers on while also sensibly retaining strike as much as possible.

Sam Curran managed to bring the equation down to 23 runs required off 18 balls and seemed like he would take England home. However, three excellent overs followed from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya and T Natarajan that ensured that Curran and England fell short by 7 runs. The youngster ended on 95* – the highest score by a batsman batting at No. 8 or lower in ODI history.

Sam Curran was awarded the Man of the Match for his heroic knock despite England ending up on the losing side. At the presentation ceremony, he said, “We didn’t win the game, but happy with the way I played. I love winning, but it was a great experience. I haven’t done that for England for a long time, but in the end we lost. I wanted to take the majority of the balls and take it deep. It was hard to defend, but Natarajan bowled really well in the end and shows why he’s a really good bowler. I realized that one side was shorter and Bhuvi is a fantastic bowler so I played him out.”

He then spoke about the experience of playing in India and the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season saying, “Fantastic ground, great pitch and an amazing batting line-up for India, so it has been a great learning curve. Looking forward to the IPL in these conditions in a few weeks time.”

The IPL begins on the 9th of April and Curran will be seen in action on the 10th of April when Chennai Super Kings take on Delhi Capitals.
