Daniel Jones was part of the free agency for just over twenty-four hours before the Minnesota Vikings swooped in to sign the former New York Giants quarterback. He will now learn Kevin O’Connell’s playcalling beside Sam Darnold in the Twin City.

Several teams reportedly wanted to sign Jones, but he was aiming for a team that had a good chance of playing post-season football. The Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Ravens were the favorites to land him. Eventually, the Vikings made the first move.

On Wednesday, FOX Sports’ Jeff Wald spoke with Vikings starter Sam Darnold. Wald asked the 27-year-old how he views the addition of Daniel Jones as the backup.

Yeah, we obviously signed DJ today, very happy to be teammates with him. Spent some time with him in the past. Great guy. He’s played a lot of football, so just to be able to draw from his experience in certain things is going to help this football team.

Sam Darnold said.

Darnold revealed he and Jones spent some time together in the off-season. They went to a few events, including the Super Bowl.

He’s a great guy and I am really really excited to have him in the building.

Darnold added.

Daniel Jones’ contract with the Minnesota Vikings

NFL inside Jordan Schultz highlighted that the Vikings were in contact with the Giants and Jones’ representatives a couple of days before the official announcement. Schultz further added that O’Connell was familiar with the Duke graduate from the pre-draft visits and would walk into a quarterback-friendly locker room.

More importantly, Darnold, who was once considered a bust and bounced around several teams before ending up in MVP conversations by leading the Vikings to a 9-2 start, doesn’t have a contract beyond the current season. He already has teams lining up to make their No. 1 next year. On top of it, rookie first-round pick JJ McCarthy is on IR after breaking his leg. 

Jones has a good chance of taking over from Darnold being a bridge quarterback for a couple of years and proving himself that he can deliver in the right system. After that, he can sign with a team that fancies him to be their starter.

However, all of that can wait. For now, he signed a one-year $375,000 contract to be part of the Vikings practice squad. If the Vikings can continue to win games, then Jones will likely get a few reps to provide some rest for Darnold in the last few weeks.

Jones started the season opener for the Giants against the Vikings, in which he threw 22-of-42 passes for 186 yards, two picks—Andrew Van Ginkel’s pick-six. He played 10 games (2-8), and threw 216 completions for 2070 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, to go with 24 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
