Former American tennis player Sam Querrey was very emotional after he saw Novak Djokovic hit the last winner during his Olympic final clash with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in Paris. During a recent podcast, Querrey revealed how, when Djokovic scripted history, he cried after a long time.
Djokovic, who was unsuccessful in winning the gold medal in his previous four attempts in Beijing, London, Rio, and Tokyo, reached the final at the Olympics for the first time and did not look back. He defeated Alcaraz 7-6(3), 7-6(2) to become the fifth player to achieve the career Golden Slam.
Djokovic was shaking and crying after realizing that he finally was able to fulfill his dream, and along with him, his supporters, including Querrey, became emotional.
I didn’t cry when I got married or had my kids. I was on the sofa the other day watching this with my wife. I wiped a tiny tear, watching Novak… My wife was crying, she was crying too. Like a half tear. Watery eye!Sam Querrey said on the Nothing Major podcast
Querrey has met Djokovic 11 times on the ATP Tour and has won just two matches. Their last meeting was at the 2019 Cincinnati Open Round of 32 where Djokovic registered his ninth victory over the American.
Sam Querrey reacts after Novak Djokovic decided to skip Cincinnati Open
Novak Djokovic has decided to skip the Canadian Open, but he was expected to feature in the Cincinnati Open. But his decision to skip that tournament also surprised many as they thought he would play at least one tournament on the hard court before arriving in New York for the US Open.
Sam Querrey, however, was not surprised at all as he explained why Djokovic decided not to play in the tournament even though he is the defending champion.
Yeah, not surprising at all. I mean the emotion that spewed out of him after that gold medal, anyone needs five to six weeks to recover from that type of emotion, so no surprise here. But I expect him to be ready to go to the US Open, and honestly, I feel like he’s going to be at the US Open just playing with house money.Sam Querrey told Tennis Channel
Djokovic has confirmed his participation at the Shanghai Open. A few days ago, the tournament’s social media handle announced his participation in the event for the first time since 2019.
