- Samuel Lopez believes Carlos Alcaraz can achieve a calendar year Grand Slam in 2026 after winning the Australian Open.
- Alcaraz became the youngest man to complete a Career Grand Slam at 23, having won the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
- He remains unbeaten in 2026, leading the ATP rankings and is favored to win the upcoming Indian Wells Open.
Carlos Alcaraz’s coach, Samuel Lopez, has revealed that he believes the Spaniard can win all four Grand Slams this season, something Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal failed to achieve. The World No.1 has started the 2026 season brilliantly following his maiden title run at the Australian Open.
Alcaraz had longed to complete his career Grand Slam last year but failed to do so at Wimbledon. Having claimed the Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open, the Australian Open was the only major silverware missing from his trophy cabinet. However, he finally got his hand on the trophy on February 1 after beating Djokovic in the final.
At 22, he became the youngest man to ever complete a Career Grand Slam, an achievement that puts him ahead of the likes of Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer. After the Australian Open, he continued with his form at the Qatar Open, beating Arthur Fils to win his second title this season.
However, he’s fully on course to win all four Grand Slams this year as he’s the defending champion of the French Open and US Open and won Wimbledon in 2023 and 2024. But the possibility of winning all four Slams remains low, as Djokovic tried to do it in 2023 and 2021 but failed, losing the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open, respectively.
Federer tried to claim the four Grand Slams but lost to Nadal on three occasions at the French Open. During an interview with Puntodebreak, Samuel Lopez, who became Alcaraz’s head coach following the 22-year-old’s split with Juan Carlos Ferrero, revealed that with the level of concentration and confidence Alcaraz has, he can be able to win a calendar year Grand Slam:
The possibility of coaching a world number 1 after 30 years in the profession motivated me. During the preseason, Carlos showed total dedication, paid great attention and intensity in training, and maintained a very positive attitude at all times, willing to listen and be helped. The challenge would be to win all four Grand Slams this year. It’s ambitious, but possible.
Nadal came very close to winning the four Grand Slams in 2010, but missed out at the Australian Open. Tennis legend Rod Laver remains the only player to have ever achieved that feat in the Open Era. He did so in 1962 and 1969. Meanwhile, Don Budge was the first to complete the quadruple in 1938 before the Open Era.
Boris Becker praises Carlos Alcaraz ahead of his Indian Wells opener
Carlos Alcaraz remains unbeaten in 2026. After two tournaments this year, he has won 12 matches and sits at the top of the ATP rankings with a 2,500 lead over Jannik Sinner, who is World No.2. Alcaraz is the favorite to win the Indian Wells Open, a tournament he has reached the semi-finals in the past four seasons.

With his current form, he has been unbeatable on the court. During the Doha Open, his opponents pleaded with him to let them beat him even once, as he was on a rampage. During a conversation on Eurosport, German legend Boris Becker highlighted that Alcaraz is the most fantastic player currently in the men’s circuit:
We all have good days and bad days. It’s clear Carlos is world no. 1, but a year ago, we said the same about Jannik. That’s the beauty of sport – you never know what can happen, but right now Carlos looks fantastic.
Alcaraz will face Grigor Dimitrov in the second round of the Indian Wells. He has beaten the Bulgarian four times on tour, while just losing twice. However, the losses have come in his last three meetings with the former World No. 3, who’s yet to reach his best physical level after a terrible injury last year.
