Sofia Kenin vs Barbora Krejcikova: Preview
Both Sofia Kenin and Barbora Krejcikova were handed a wildcard entry into the tournament and they made the most of the opportunity. While Kenin faced Veronika Kudermetova in the opening-round match, Krejcikova got a bye and faced Anhelina Kelinina in the second round. It was an easy win (in straight sets of 6-3, 6-3) for the World No.14. Meanwhile, Kenin also beat Kudermetova in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4. In her second-round match, the American eased past compatriot Katie Volynets.
In the quarterfinals, Kenin annihilated Anastasia Potapova who had defeated Ons Jabeur in the previous round. The American beat the Russian in straight sets of 6-2, 6-3. In the semis, Kenin faced Emma Navarro who posed some challenges, winning the second set. However, the 2020 Australian Open winner recovered quickly and took the match 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to book a place in the final and set up a clash with Krejcikova.
The Czech, on the other hand, faced seventh-seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in the quarterfinals. She beat the Brazilian in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). In the semifinals, Krejcikova took on Danielle Collins who started well, taking the first set 6-3. But, Krejcikova got back up quickly to topple the American. She won the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Now, the 2021 French Open champion has to face another American in the summit clash in the quest to win her first singles title this year.
Sofia Kenin vs Barbora Krejcikova: Prediction
Both Sofia Kenin and Barbora Krejcikova have had great campaigns so far at the San Diego Open 2023. Now, as they are one step away from lifting the trophy, none of them would want to lose the plot. Also, Krejcikova leads the head-to-head record 1-0. She had defeated Kenin in straight sets in Rome two years ago and she is expected to do the same this time around.
