In a shocking twist of events, Sheel Seidler, the widow of late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler, has sued her in-laws for the control of the team. She announced this on a social media post, sending shockwaves among MLB fans.
Peter Seidler acquired the ownership of the Padres in 2012 along with his uncles Peter O’Malley, and Ron Fowler, who formed the O’Malley Group. Following his death in November 2023, his brother John was given the control of the franchise.
In a lawsuit filed in the Travis County Probate Court in Austin, Texas, Sheel accused her brother in-laws Matthew and Robert Seidler. She claimed claimed fiduciary breaches of trust, fraud, conversion and egregious acts of self-dealing against the brothers of her husband in the petition.
Earlier today, I filed a complaint against Matthew Seidler and Robert Seidler to protect my family and to carry out Peter’s legacy. Aside from our three wonderful children, and our marriage, there was nothing Peter and I valued more than the opportunity to serve as stewards of this extraordinary franchise.

In the petition, she also accused Robert’s wife Alecia of making “multiple racist, profane and hateful communications” at her. This comes due to the fact of her being of Indian descent. In the statement released on X, she further admitted that this was not a decision that she took lightly.
To @Padres fans, I want you to hear directly from me. Peter and I had a mission to bring championship baseball to San Diego. That remains my commitment to you. Read my full statement below. pic.twitter.com/YW605jZ0P8

Peter Seidler trust denies Sheel Seidler’s allegations
Just a few hours after Sheel Seidler dropped a bombshell lawsuit against Peter Seidler’s brothers, the trust of the late owner answered back. The trust denied all the allegations labeled at Matthew and Robert Seidler by her.

In a statement released, a spokesperson claimed that the lawsuit was “entirely without merit“. The trust said that Peter already had a plan and added that Sheel agreed on a sworn document that she would not interfere with the person in control of the team.
The complaint filed by Sheel Seidler, the widow of Peter Seidler, is entirely without merit. Peter had a clear estate plan. The plan specifically named three of his nine siblings, with whom he had worked closely for many decades, as successor trustees of his trust and Peter himself prohibited Sheel from ever serving as trustee… Sheel agreed in a sworn document that she had no right to be or to designate the Control Person and that she would not interfere with the designated Control Person.

It will be interesting to see how this case develops. The San Diego Padres are certainly likely to draw more attention in the upcoming days.
This development comes at a time when the Padres are looking to build upon from the 2024 season. After qualifying for the postseason again, they fell short in the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
At the moment, they are involved in pursuit of top free agent Roki Sasaki. It now remains to be seen whether this matter will have any effect on Sasaki’s chase.
